The Field of Aesthetics
philosophy – theory the ultimate reality of things.
of beauty – nature of beauty : why are beautiful thing
beautiful?
And art - essence of art: what makes something a work of
art.
Sample just like painting. a work of art is a beautifully made piece
of furniture.
• Beauty is an Aesthetic based on proportion and
Pre-Socratic
Times number, elements including clarity, symmetry,
harmony and vivid colour
• Beauty resided in proper measure and size, of
Plato parts that fit harmoniously into a seamless whole
• Theory of ideal forms
• Beauty resided in “order and symmetry and
Aristotle
definiteness”
• Beauty was synonymous with geometric form and
Augustine of balance.
Hippo • Equilateral triangles are more beautiful than
scalene triangle since parts were more even.
• Beauty must be present in both details and the
Plotinus
whole cannot be constructed out of ugliness.

• THE PRIMARY FILIPINO AESTHETIC TERM
GANDA
• “SUM TOTAL OF KATANGIAN (TRAITS) OF ANYTHING THAT
(BEAUTY) GIVES THE HIGHEST PLEASURE TO THE SENSES”
GANDA (BEAUTY) – BUTI (GOOD)
• RELATIVE TERM SINCE ITS USE DEPENDS ON THE JUDGEMENT OF THE BEHOLDER
• WHEN APPLIED TO PERSON, GANDA INVOLVES BOTH PHYSICAL APPEARANCE (AYOS) AND SOCIAL
CHARACTER (UGALI).
• GANDA THEN IS ABOUT THE “ TOTALITY OF THE PERSON,” BOTH HIS PAGKATAONG PANLABAS (PHYSICAL
APPEARANCE) AND HIS PAGKATAONG PANLOOB ( SOCIAL BEAHAVIOR)
• GANDA AND BUTI (GOOD) ARE INTERCHANGEBLE TERMS SO THAT WHATEVER IS MAGANDA IS ALSO
MABUTI. AESTHETIC TASTE INVOLVES MORAL JUDGEMENT
The Concept of the Aesthetic
Aesthetic Objects
is ambiguous, and, depending on its interpretation, may suggest two separate
programs of philosophical aesthetics. The expression may denote either the “ intentional ”
or the “material” object of aesthetic experience.
Aesthetic Judgment
Judgment based on a feeling. He was especially concerned to describe those feeling-
based judgments in which an object is found beautiful, and then to show that we are
entitled to make such judgments despite being unable to verify them.
The Aesthetic Attitude
There are two parts to the aesthetic attitude: the aesthetic part, and the attitude part.
Here, an attitude is a certain state of mind. In particular, it is a way of approaching
experiences or orienting oneself toward the world. It may help to think of someone with an
optimistic attitude.
Aesthetic Experience
Aesthetic experience concerns the appreciation of aesthetic objects and
the resulting pleasure. Aesthetic living means taking a genuine interest in all
details of daily life. We can adopt an aesthetic attitude toward any aspect of
our lives.
Aesthetic Value
Aesthetic values are those that relate to the appearance of an object and
the emotions that that object causes in those who contemplate it. Therefore,
it is the value judgments that an observer emits on the appearance of an
object taking into account those feelings that it evokes in it (Values, 2014).
