Lesson 7 How Fossil Fuels Are Formed 1

Fossil fuels are formed from the remains of ancient plants and animals. Over millions of years, dead organisms are buried under layers of sediment and subjected to high heat and pressure, transforming them into coal, oil, or natural gas. The three major types of fossil fuels - coal, oil, and natural gas - differ in their formation processes and carbon content. Coal ranges from hard anthracite to lignite and is formed from compressed plant matter.

FOUR MAJOR RANKS

1. ANTHRACITE
2. BITUMINOUS COAL
3. SUBBITUMINOUS COAL
4. LIGNITE
ANTHRACITE
Anthracite is the highest rank of
coal. It is hard, brittle and black,
lustrous coal, often referred to as
hard coal, containing a high
percentage of fixed carbon and a
low percentage of volatile matter.
BITUMINOUS
COAL
Bituminous has a high heating
value and is the most common type
of coal used in electricity
generation. It appears shiny and
smooth at first glance, but when
you look closely, you will see that it
has layers.
SUB-
BITUMINOUS
COAL
Sub-bituminous Coal which is black
in color and dull, and has a higher
heating value than lignite.
LIGNITE
Lignite which is also known as
brown coal. It is the lowest grade
coal with the least concentration of
carbon.
