WHAT IS GAMABA?

• Gamaba was recognize the outstanding work of artists in the Philippines.


• It is the National Living Treasures Award, alternatively known as the GAWAD
Manlilikha ng Bayan ‘Award for the creators of the country’, is conferred to a person or
group of artists recognized by the Government of the Philippines for their contributions to
the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

WEAVING FORM

• Lang Dulay
Born: August 3,1928

Year of Conferment: 1998

Died: April 30,2015

Ethnicity/Location: T’boli/Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, Mindanao. Southern

Philippines

Expertise: T’nalak weaving

-Lang Dulay was a recipient of the traditional weaver who was a recipient of
the National Living Treasures Award. She is credited with preserving her
people’s tradition of weaving T’nalak, a dyed fabric made from refined abaca
fiber.

Salinta Monon
Born: December 12,1920

Year of Conferment:1998

Died: June 4,2009

Ethnicity/ Location: Tagabawa Bagobo/ Bansalan, Davao del Sur, southeastern


Mindanao island, southern Philippines

Expertise: Inabal weaving

- Salinta Monon was a Filipino textile weaver who was the one of two recipients of the
National Living Treasures Award in 1998. She was known for her Bagobo-Tagabawa
textiles and was known as the “last Bagobo weaver”.

Year of Conferment: 2004

Died: March 12,2005

Ethnicity/ Location: Tausog/ Parang, Sulu, southern Philippines

Expertise: pis siyabit weaving

-Darhata Sawabi is a Filipino weaver from Parang, Sulu known for pis syabit, a
traditional Tausug cloth tapestry worn as a head covering by the people of Jolo.
She is a recipient of the National Living Treasures Award, having given the
distinction in 2004.

• Haja Amina Appi


Born: June 25,1925

Died: April 2,2013

Ethnicity/ Location: Sama/ Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi, southern Philippines

Expertise: mat weaving

- Haja Amina Appi was a Filipino master mat weaver and teacher from the
Sama indigenous people of Ungos Matata, Tandubas, Tawi-Tawi. She was
credited for creating colorful pandan mats with complex geometric patterns.

• Magdalena Gamayo
Born: August 13,1924

Year of Conferment:2012

Ethnicity/ Location: Ilocano/ Pinili, Ilocos Norte, northern Luzon island,


northern Philippines

- Magdalena Gamayo is a Filipino weaver who is lead-practitioner of the


Ilocano tradition of pinagabel.

Ethnicity/ Location: Hanunoo Mangyan/ Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro, central

Expertise: surat Mangyan and ambahan poetry

- Ginaw Bilog was a Filipino poet who was recognized as a National Living
Treasure by the Philippine government. Bilog was a Hanunuo Mangyan who
was a native of Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. He was known for his efforts in
preserving the Mangyan poetry tradition of ambahan.

• Masino Intaray
Born: April 10,1943

Year of Conferment: 1993

Died: November 30,2013

Ethnicity/ Location: Pala’wan/ Brookes Point, Palawan island, central


Philippines

Expertise: lyrical poems (kulilal, basal, and bagit) and playing their
accompanying instruments; epic chanting and story telling.

- Masino Intaray was a Filipino poet, bard artist, and musician who is a Palawan
native known for his performance of the local traditions of basal, kulilal and
bagit. He is also a recipient of the tinapa hoy maerich dine National Living
Treasure recognition .

• Samaon Sulaiman
Born: March 3,1953

Year of Conferment: 1993

Died: May 21,2011

Ethnicity/ Location: Magindanao/ Mama sa Pano, Maguindanao island,


southern Philippines

Expertise: playing the Kudyapi

- Samaon was a Filipino musician who is a recipient of the National Living


Treasure award. The Maguindanaon is known for his mastery of the indigenous
kutyapi instrument. Sulaimon first learned playing kutyapi at around 13 years
old from his uncle.

• Alonzo Saclag
Born: August 4,1942

- Alonzo is a Filipino musician and dancer who is a recipient of the National


Living Treasures Award.

Expertise: chanting the sugidanon epic of the Panay Bukidnon

- Federico is a Filipino chanter of Philippine epic poetry. Federico is a recipient


of the National Living Treasures Award.

- Uwang Ahadas was a Filipino folk musician of the Yakan people who was a
recipient of the National Living Treasures Award

• Eduardo Mutuc
Born: October 12,1949

Year of Conferment:2004

Ethnicity/Location: Kapampangan/ Apalit Pampanga, central Luzon island,


northern Philippines

Expertise: Silver plating of religious and secular art

- Eduardo Mutuc is a Filipino metalsmith and sculptor. He is a known to be a


practitioner of the craft of pinukpuk which involved the stamping of
embellishments on metal sheets. Mutuc create works of both secular and
religious nature using silver, wood and bronze mediums.
PLASTIC ARTS

• Teofilo Garcia
Born: March 27,1941

Year of Conferment: 2012

Known for: Tabunggaw (guard) hat

Ethnicity/Location: Ilocano/ San Quintin, Abra, Northern Luzon Island,


Philippines

Expertise: Gourd Casque making

- Teofilo Garcia is a Filipino hatter who is regarded as a National Living


Treasure in the PHILIPPINES for making tabungaw hats, a type of Ilocano
headwear.
