PROJECT PRESENTATION OF THE

CONCEPTION AND DESIGN OF A
STUDENT HOSTEL, CASE STUDY: MILE
2 LAYOUT EXTENSION, LIMBE
PRESENTED BY KEYEB DARWIN DINGKAH IN PARTIAL
FULFILMENT OF BSC IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

Why do we need student

hostels in Limbe?
 More private universities and state universities are
expanding to Limbe
 as far as modern student hostels are concerned, the
student residential area of LIMBE are far left behind in
terms of comfortable accommodations.
 Students of higher institutions of learning are forced to
cohabit in compounds occupied by the general
population
 These poses great social, health and academic setbacks
for the students as distraction rates are alarming leading
to high drop out rates.

Brief overview of the concept

 The Proposed structure is to solve the problem of
accommodation to the rapidly growing student population
in Limbe
 Standard engineering structure that can beautify the
image of the town
 G+3 Building, that is 4 levels.GF and1st F being
apartments (lecturers) and 2nd-3RD F being single well
equipped rooms
 Hall on the first floor for events
 Principal elements studied were: the roof, beams,
columns, foundation, stairs and decking
 Cost estimate evaluated and duration of execution

What Materials used in this project ?

 Materials used are wood, concrete, stones, gravel, Soil
and steel

 The soil is evaluated by physical evaluation and it is

rocky and stable in nature

 The structural member of the roof is wood while that of

foundations, footings ,pillars and beams are of
reinforced concrete. They all carry and transmit the
actual load of the building to the soil.

way pit
 Dimension of 3x2x2.5, total volume of 15m3
 Main chambers separated with 8cm concrete cast
insitu
 Gradients shall be min 20% and IS constructed at
every junction
 Min dimension of soakaway pit (2.50m in diameter
and 5.50m deep from the outlet pipe
 Soakaway are to be filled with stones to a min dept
of 1.20m
16

Project Planning and scheduling

 Time as well as money is an impt factor for job control.Proper Planning and
scheduling in advance will help avoid confusions and disorder
 It’s objective is to identify different problems and delays in the course of the
project
 Also to control work progress and to establish link btn different operations
 WE use PERT network(Program evaluation and Review Technique
 GANT Diagram (work completed over a period of VS the time planned for
the work)
 Manpower diagram( Right number and type of personel to carry out a required
task throughout the course of the project )
Technical Specifications
A-Scope of Works
1. Site Preparation and Soil investigation
2. Safety of workers and visitors, site security
3. Utilities and sanitation at site
4. Setting out, Excavation and foundation works
5. Structural elements(Concrete, formwork, block works,
wood work)
6. Electrical and plumbing
7. Finishes(Alu window, doors, balusters, Tiling and
painting
8. Landscaping (paving and gutters) 17
Inspection and Controls
 Control engineer must ensure the following
 All materials must meet up with specifications (cement,
rods, steel, wood)
 Quality control to ensure all tasks are executed following
standard procedures and mixtures
 Time advancement( control works advancement and time
consumed to ensure project is finished on time)
 Ensure equipment's used on site are of good state

LIMITATIONS OF THIS 20

PROJECT
 Insufficient funds to carry out detail studies

 Limited time to carry out the studies(1 month)

 Civil Engineering is more of scientific studies

dealing with sampling and testing of material in
the laboratories and the absence of these facilities
is one of the drawbacks of this project.
Conclusion
 Main aim is to seek solution to the problems of
accommodation to students and school staffs
 Cost of this project should not be a discouraging factor
as it is always said that cheap things are always
expensive in the end
 I hope this project is brought to reality as money is the
key to every project and the project should be realized
under the supervision of a seasoned engineer under the
National Order of Civil Engineers in
Cameroon(ONIGC-NOCE)

RECOMMENDATION
 Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in
partnership with the local councils should strictly study the
drawings of students hostels submitted and ensure they are
of engineering standards to avoid failure in future
 Drawings and Structural calculations should be visa by
architects and engineers in the respective national orders
 HIPAL should endeavor to send supervisors to visit their
students in enterprise where they’re carrying out
internship/research
