Questions on Living in Space
Page 425 #1 to 9
Briefly describe how working in the
space station might affect a person
psychologically?
• Psychologically, it is challenging to
work in an environment that is
cramped.
• No privacy, space,
fresh air, etc.
How does living in a microgravity
environment for a long period of time
affect the human body?
• In microgravity, bones weaken,
muscles atrophy (weaken), and even
vision degrades over time.
Why must a space suit be flexible?
• Movement is restricted due to air
pressure, so the suit need to be
flexible so the astronauts can work.
How many people are there in a typical
crew on the International Space Station?
• Typically 3-6 (last two missions had 6)
Name four necessities of an astronaut,
in order to work outside of a spacecraft.
• Air
• Water
• Heating
• Cooling
Explain why a regular ballpoint pen will
not work in space.
• Microgravity and low air pressure
means the ink will not go into the
pen.
What problems do astronauts encounter when
trying to eat and swallow their food?
•In zero gravity, it is difficult to eat
without food floating around. It has
to be contained
in pouches.
Fill in the following table
Problems of Living in Space Recommendations
Loss of body mass High protein diet, exercise
Decrease in the production of Vitamin supplements, proteins, exercise
