Learning Objectives
At the end of the learning session, you are expected to :
1) identify radical equations;
2) solves equations involving radical expressions
(M9AL-Iii-1); and
3) appreciates the application of radical equations in
real life.
Radical equation
A radical equation is an equation whose unknown
quantity appears in the radicand.
Determine whether the given equation is
a radical equation or NOT.
1. 3 𝑥 + √ 2=14 NOT radical equation
2. 3 √ 𝑥+2=14 Radical Equation
3. 5 ( √ 𝑥+ 2 )=30 Radical Equation
4. √ 5 ( 𝑥+ 2 )=30NOT radical equation
Principle of powers
To solve radical equations, we need to apply the
Principle of Powers.

That is, if , then .

Steps in solving radical equations
1. Write the equation such that the radical containing
the unknown is on one side of the equation.

√ 𝑥 −3=6
2. Combine similar terms.

√ 𝑥 −3=6
Steps in solving radical equations
3. Raise both members of the equation to a power
whose exponent is the same as the index of the radical.
If the equation is free of radicals, then complete the
solution.

Generalizations
1) What is/are the important thing/s we should
remember in solving radical equations?
2) Why is it important to do checking after we get the
values of the unknown in a radical equation?
3) Give one new learning for today’s lesson.
