JAPAN
Japan is a beautiful country located in Asia as the ‘land of the rising
sun’. It is in the Pacifi c Ocean and lies to the east of the Sea of Japan,
China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia. Japan is made up of four
main islands: Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku form a curve that
extends for about 1900 kilometers, The capital of the city is Tokyo. It is
famous for its unique art, architecture, cuisine, fashion, music and
technology. Japan has a rich history that dates back thousands of years.
Japan made contributions to the world such as science, literature and
philosophy. Moreover, its people are known for their discipline, hard
work and resilience, even in the face of severe natural disasters.

discovered
Japan?
In 1543, three Portuguese
travelers abroad a Chinese
ship drifted ashore on
Tanegashima, a small island
near Kyushu. They were the
fi rst Europeans to visit Japan.
Japan was then founded in 11
February 660 BC. Japan is
now 15 million years old.

Golden
Pavilion

Kinkakuji, AKA Golden Pavilion, us is one of the


most famous sights in Kyoto. The golden
temple that is actually made of gold, has been
a popular attraction for many. During the
winter, the white color of the temple creating
a breathtaking sight.

The temple was the retirement villa of the


shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and according to
his will it became a Zen temple of the Rinzai
sect after his death in 1408. Kinkakuji was
built to echo the extravagant Kitayama culture
that developed in the wealthy aristocratic
circles of Kyoto during Yoshimitsu’s times.

OSAKA CASTLE
Osaka castle is a wonderfully historic castle that has
played a huge part in several events over the last
fi ve hundred years.

Osaka castle is a beautiful historical site.


Construction began in 1583 and fi nished shortly after
to be the largest castle at the time. The castle was
built to be the center of a new, unifi ed Japan.

Over the coming years, a huge number of historical


events rocked the foundation of the castle. For
example, Tokugawa troops attacked and destroyed
the castle in order to terminate the Toyotomi lineage.
Shortly after that, the castle was rebuilt, only for the
main tower to be struck by lightning and burn forty
years later.

In the 20 t h century, the castle was hugely repaired


and fortifi ed to bring it up to the strong, imposing
status that it holds now. The castle tower is
