Topic 2 Science 6 Solutions, Suspensions and Colloids

The document discusses solutions and suspensions, categorizing various mixtures as homogeneous or heterogeneous. It defines solutions as liquid mixtures where the solute dissolves completely in the solvent, while suspensions consist of solid particles that do not dissolve and settle over time. The document includes comprehension checks and quizzes to reinforce understanding of these concepts.

Solutions

Solutions or liquid homogeneous mixtures

are liquid mixtures that looks liquid all through
out the mixtures. It is generally composed
of a liquid solvent and solid solute.
A mixture of chocolate powder and water looks
brown and liquid all through out the mixture,
thus it is a solution. The chocolate powder is
the solute and the water is the solvent.
Comprehension Check: Infer if the following

Suspension and Colloids

Suspension and Colloids are

heterogeneous mixtures with uneven
distribution of materials containing
two or more phases observable within
them.
Suspension

Suspensions are mixtures in which solid

particles settle at the bottom when left
undisturbed for sometime.
For example, a mixture of mud and water.
The water will look brownish when they are
mixed together, but after some time the mud

Substances in suspension do not dissolve

completely in solvents. The particles that do
not dissolve settle down at the bottom of the
container.
Other Examples of Suspension
• A mixture of mud and water looks cloudy as
observed in puddles (lim-aw sa bisaya), after
some time the mud will settle at the bottom
like a dirty water (lubog siya tan-awon).
• Another example is a mixture of soap
powder and water. You can observed that
when you wash your plates with soap and
leave it. The water at the top gets clearer,
while the soap settles down as gray liquid
below.
Comprehension Check:
Read the following questions and choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. What is a suspension mixture?

a. It is liquid and clear.
b. Mixtures that don’t completely dissolve and settle down at the
bottom.
c. It is a mixture dissolved completely
d. None of the above

2. Which of the following solute and solvent does not a belong to

suspension mixture?
a. Water and sugar C. water and mud
b. Flour and water D. soap powder and alcohol
Comprehension Check:
Read the following questions and choose the letter of the correct answer.

3. What kind of mixture is suspension?

a. Heterogeneous B. Homogeneous C. Uniform D.
complex to describe

4. How do the solute particles in a suspension behave after mixing

with solvent?
a. settle at the bottom/ float in the water C. It doesn’t
dissolved in solvent
b. the mixture becomes a cloudy D. All of the
above
Comprehension Check:
Read the following questions and choose the letter of the correct answer.

5. Some substances do not dissolve completely in solvents.

The particles that do not dissolve settle down at the bottom
of the container. Is this a suspension mixture? Why?
a. Yes, because particles in suspension does not dissolve
completely.
b. No, because particles dissolve completely in suspension.
c. Maybe because a suspension does not behave the same
way.
d. It can be, but solutions behave this way too.
Short Quiz: Identify if the following
mixtures. Write SO if it is a solution and
