2.8 Sketch Functions From Verbal Descriptions

The document is a lesson plan for an 8th-grade mathematics class focused on sketching functions from verbal descriptions. It outlines learning objectives, activities related to analyzing oil consumption, and examples of sketching both linear and nonlinear functions. The lesson emphasizes understanding the relationship between variables and interpreting graphs to describe function behavior.

Sketch Functions from

Verbal Descriptions
Mathematics 8
Pages 201 - 206
Lesson essential question:
How does the sketch of a
graph of a function help
describe it behavior?
Learning objective:
At the end of the session we are expected to:

✔ Draw a sketch of a graph for a function

that has been described verbally
✔ Analyze and interpret the sketch of a
graph of a function
The Environment Club is learning about oil
consumption and energy conservation around the
world.
 Jack says that the oil consumption in the United
States has dropped a lot.
 Ashley says that the oil consumption in China is the
biggest problem facing the world environment.

A. Do you agree or disagree with Jack’s statement? Construct an argument based on the
graph to support your position.

Disagree with Jack, the largest decreases is the United

States was between 2007 and 2009, but it wasn’t very
much.

B. Do you agree or disagree with Ashley’s statement? Construct an argument based on

the graph to support your position.

Agree with Ashley. Oil use in China more than

doubled from 2000 to 2011.
This is the biggest increase in the graph.
How to sketch a
function?
➔ Step 1: Identify the two variables (input, output) that

have a relationship

➔ Step 2: Analyze the situation. Look for key words that

indicate that the function is increasing, decreasing, or

constant.
Sketch the Graph of a
Linear Function
A scuba diver starts a dive with a full tank
of oxygen. While diving, she breathes at a
constant rate.
She checks the gauge after 22 minutes.
What does a graph of the function
look like?
Identify the two variables. Analyze the relationship between Sketch and label a graph that
the two variables. represents the behavior of the
function.

The oxygen level in the

tank decreases at a
constant rate over
time.

How are the sketches of the two functions similar? How are they different?
Both sketches show a linear relationship.
One shows a function that is decreasing,
and the other shows a function that is increasing.
Analyze the Sketch of a
Nonlinear Function
Danika sketched the relationship between
altitude and time for one of her parasailing
flights.
Describe the behavior of the function
in each interval.

Nonlinear Function
Jose is practicing javelin throws.
What is the relationship between the height of the javelin and time?
What would the graph of this function look like?

Example 3
Sketch the Graph of a
Nonlinear Function
Haru rides bike from his home for 30 minutes at a fast pace.
He stops to rest for 20 minutes, and then continues in the same
direction at a slower pace for 30 more minutes.
Sketch a graph of the relationship of Haru’s distance from home
over time.

Take note!

 You can describe the relationship between two quantities by

analyzing the behavior of the function relating the quantities
in different intervals on a graph.
Do You Understand?
1. How does a qualitative graph describe the relationship between
quantities?
The graph shows how two quantities are related in each
interval without using number.
The behavior of the function in these intervals can be
described as increasing, decreasing, or constant.

2. How would knowing the slope of a linear function help

determine whether a function is increasing or decreasing?
If the slope is positive, the function is
increasing.
If the slope is negative, it is
decreasing.
3. What kind of graph of a function shows the same output values,
or y-values, for each input value, or x-value?
A constant function

4. A class plants a tree. Sketch the
graph of the height of the tree over
time.
a. Identify the two variables.
Input: Time
Output: Height of the tree
b. How can you describe the
relationship between the two
variables?
The height of the tree increases
over time.
c. Sketch the graph.

5. An airplane takes 15 minutes to reach its cruising altitude. The
plane cruises at that altitude for 90 minutes, and then descends
for 20 minutes before it lands. Sketch the graph of the height of
the plane over time.
