Methodology
● Simulation of HFCG was carried out with two techniques:
the Zero-D code or the analytical expression technique and
the 2D filamentary MHD code.
○ Zero-D code or the analytical expression technique uses
analytical expressions for generator inductance. The modeling of
resistive losses takes into account the heating of conductors and
diffusion of the magnetic field, resulting skin effect and proximity
effect. The advantage of this model is that it could easily be
extended to multi-pitch configurations of HFCG. This model was
implemented in MATLAB-Simulink.
○ 2D filamentary MHD code method results in a system of
differential equations which are time-variant. Once the state
equations are derived, these are solved using the method of
dynamic matrices. The code was implemented in MATLAB.
Outcomes
● The project resulted in development of reasonably
accurate models of HFCG and hence reduced the
time and material resources engaged in
experimentation
● It helped the scientists in developing understanding
of the physical processes of HFCG through better
simulation models and visualizations of results.
Future Plan
● For 3D simulation of HFCGs the available
multiphysics simulation softwares have limitations.
● A 3D simulation code using Arbitrary Lagrangian
Eularian (ALE) techniques is a possible alternative
● ALE3D-MHD can provide useful insights into the
generator operation that are otherwise unattainable
from the experiment.
