Q2-Gr.3 – Week
6
DAY 1
Lesson
At the end of the lesson, the
learners should be able to
add
4-digit numbers with sums
up to 10 000 with
regrouping.
Give the
correct sum.

Work in pairs. Each pair
must solve the problem
using either the
expanded or vertical
form and write their
solution and final
answer on their show-
1) 3 584 + 4 409
2) 3 487 + 2 935
3) 4 508 + 2 694
Expected answers:
1) 3 584 + 4 409
Using the expanded form:
10
3 584 = 3 000 + 500 + 80 +
4
+ 4 409 = 4 000 + 400 + 0
+9
Expected answers:
1) 3 584 + 4 409
Using the vertical form:
1
3 584
+ 4 409
7 993
Important ideas:
In using the expanded form,
a. Express the numbers in expanded form, making
sure that the values of the digit with the
same place value are aligned in the same
column.
b. Add the numbers starting from the ones column
and moving to the left.
c. Regroup if needed.
d. Combine the sums from each column to get the
final sum.
In using the vertical form,
a. Align digits with the same place value in the same
column.
2) 3 487 + 2 935
Using the expanded form:
1 000 100 10
3 487 = 3 000 + 400 + 80 + 7
+ 2 935 = 2 000 + 900 + 30 + 5
6 422 = 6 000 + 400 + 20 + 2
Using the vertical form:
1 11
3 487
+ 2 935
6 422
3) 4 508 + 2 694
Using the expanded form:
1 000 100 10
4 508 = 4 000 + 500 + 0 + 8
+ 2 694 = 2 000 + 600 + 90 + 4
7 202 = 7 000 + 200 + 0 + 2
Using the vertical form:
1 11
4 508
+ 2 694
7 202
Solve the problem
using the expanded
and vertical form.
1) 4 328 + 3 147
2) 2 375 + 6 674
3) 1 235 + 6 927
4) 3 296 + 2905
Have the learners work
in pairs. Instruct them
to write their answers
on their show-me
boards. Give them
enough time to find the
missing digit.

the digit with the same place value
are aligned in the same column.
b. Add the numbers starting from the
ones column and moving to the left.
c. Regroup if needed.

Using the vertical form
a. Align digits with the
same place value in the
same column.
b. Start by adding the digits
in the ones place and
moving to the left.
c. Regroup if needed.
How do we find
the missing digit
in a given
addition task?
We use the known digits in
the addends and the sum,
applying our understanding of
addition to find the missing
digit.

We are asked to
determine the total
amount of money
Possible Solutions:
Combine the money
collected by each group.
Then, organize it by value
(e.g. bills and coins). Next,
get the total amount for
each group. Finally, add
these amounts to find the

DAY 3
Lesson
At the end of the lesson,
the learners should be
able to estimate the sum
of addends with up to 4
digits.
Rules:
1. Identify the place value to which you are
rounding.
2. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the
rounding place
a. If it is less than 5 (i.e., 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4), round
down by keeping the digit in the rounding place
the same and changing all digits to its right to 0.
b. If it is 5 or greater (i.e., 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9), round
up by adding 1 to the digit in the rounding
place and changing all digits to its right to
0.

Nearest hundreds: 5 500 (7 > 5)
Read the problem aloud to the learners,
then have them read it aloud together.

How do you estimate the sum of
two numbers up to four digits?
To estimate the sum of two
numbers with up to four digits,
round each number to the nearest
thousands, hundreds, or tens, then
add those rounded numbers
together.
How do we round numbers?
Identify the place value to which you are
rounding.
