[ruby-core:43669] Absolute file names for Kernel.load

From: "Thorsten Gecks" <thorsten.gecks@...>
Date: 2012-03-25 15:13:13 UTC
List: ruby-core #43669
Hi all,

I want to apologize upfront, if I am annoying anybody with this issue. I
just had problems to debug in eclipse IDE becaues of a project having
several files of the same name and some "Kernel.load" statements in the
scripts. The debugger could not find out the absolute path of these files
and to make it worse, the relative paths were also wrong due to Dir.chdir
in the script. So I investigated on this issue and came up with this
solution (wich for sure is wrong due to my little knowledge about the
interpreter source). I am just using ruby-1.8.7 here with OpenSuse 12.1
modified the original source from this in ruby.c:

void
rb_load_file(fname)
    const char *fname;
{
    load_file(fname, 0);
}

to the following code, that prepends the absolute path to each file name
loaded based on the current working directory the interpreter has set
(this at least works for me):

void
rb_load_file(fname)
    const char *fname;
{
  static const int new_fname_buf_size = 512;
  char new_fname_buf[new_fname_buf_size];
  static const int min_dirname_length = 2; /* something like "/a" */
  int dirname_length = 0;
  int fname_length = 0;

  /* first a shortcut: we already have an absolute path or are
     reading from stdin (assuming fname non-empty) */
  if ((fname[0] == '/') || (fname[0] == '-')) {
    load_file(fname, 0); /* do standard call as in the original source
*/
  }
  else {
    fname_length = strlen(fname);

    /* another shortcut: our buffer is too small */
    if (fname_length >= (new_fname_buf_size - 1 - min_dirname_length)) {
      load_file(fname, 0); /* std call */
    }

    if (getcwd(new_fname_buf, (new_fname_buf_size - 1) - fname_length))
{

      dirname_length = strlen(new_fname_buf);

      new_fname_buf[dirname_length] = '/'; /* set dir separator */

      /* next append fname (assuming it null-terminated) */
      strcpy(new_fname_buf + dirname_length + 1, fname);

      /* finally, load script with composed absolute path now */
      load_file(new_fname_buf, 0);
    }
    else {
      load_file(fname, 0);  /* std call */
    }
  }
}

Sorry for the noise, I just wanted to share this and may get instructed
why I'm wrong.

bye

TG
