Hi all,

Fourteen years ago we introduced the Nest Learning Thermostat, which revolutionized the entire smart home industry. Since then we’ve launched multiple generations of this iconic device designed to help you save energy and money, including the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), our smartest and most beautiful thermostat yet.

We're incredibly excited about the future of Nest and the innovative experiences we're building for your smart home. To fully invest in these advancements and bring you the most cutting-edge features on our latest generation of Nest thermostats, we will be transitioning away from supporting three of our oldest devices, each over a decade old. We value the loyalty of our early Nest users, and wanted to share an overview of the upcoming changes:

Upcoming end of support for Nest Learning Thermostats (1st and 2nd gen)

As we look at what it takes to support your energy needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision that starting October 25, 2025, Nest Learning Thermostat (1st gen, 2011), Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, 2012), and Nest Learning Thermostat (2nd gen, Europe version, 2014) will no longer receive software updates. You will no longer be able to control them remotely from your phone or with Google Assistant, but can still adjust the temperature and modify schedules directly on the thermostat. Learn more about how these changes will impact your device, including help identifying which thermostat model you own.

Your thermostat will no longer receive software updates or be supported in the Nest and Home apps starting October 25, 2025. Connected features like Home/Away Assist and Google Assistant controls will no longer work.

You can still adjust the temperature, mode, schedules, and settings directly on the device. Existing schedules will continue to work uninterrupted.Learn more.

To help ease the transition and provide you with the latest thermostat technology, we’ll be reaching out to eligible users via email with the following special offers:

US: $130 off the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) (MSRP $279.99)

Canada: $160 off the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) (MSRP $379.99)

Europe: 50% off the Tado Smart Thermostat X - Starter Kit that can be set up alongside your other smart home devices in the Google Home app

All other Nest thermostat models are unaffected and will continue to receive security updates. Later this year you also will be able to create and adjust schedules for these devices in the Google Home app for the first time.

Nest thermostat updates for Europe

Heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it challenging to build for the diverse set of homes. Therefore moving forward we’ll no longer launch new Nest thermostats in Europe. With our Google Home platform approach we are enabling a wide range of established smart thermostat companies to build energy devices and experiences that cater to these markets. The Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen, 2015) and Nest Thermostat E (2018) will continue to be sold in Europe while current supplies last. These models will continue to receive security updates and you can control them via the Nest and Home apps.

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Google Home family. If you have any questions or need assistance, our support team is here to help.
