Q.1. The magnetization characteristic of a 230 Volts dc generator at 1000 rpm is obtained
experimentally, and approximated by two straight lines as given in equations (1) and (2).
Residual voltage, Ea = 20 Volts
Ea = 200 If Volts,
if If 1.14 Amp
Ea= 25 If + 200 Volts, if If > 1.14 Amp
... (1)
... (2)
Throughout the problem, shaft speed is kept constant at 1000 rpm. Neglect armature reaction.
a. Calculate the terminal voltage Vt at no-load, and under-load for a load current of
IL= 20 Amps, by assuming that the machine is connected as a separately-excited dc
generator, as shown in Fig.1.
b.
Assume now that the same machine is connected as a self-excited dc generator as shown
in Fig.2. Calculate the terminal voltage Vt at no-load, and under load for a load current of
IL= 20 Amps.
c.
Which properties of ferromagnetic materials have been exploited in operating the machine
as a self-excited dc generator? Comment on the results found in (a) and (b). Briefly describe
advantages and disadvantages of the two excitation techniques.
d.
Recommend a method in order to rise Vt found in (b) to its rated value.

Q2. A 120-V, 6-kW, 1500 rpm dc shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.204 and a
field resistance of 120 . The rotational loss torque of the motor is constant and is 4.314 Nm
This motor is driving a constant torque load, at 1500 rpm, while drawing 6000 W from the 120
V dc supply. Calculate the followings (neglect armature reaction):
a)
b)
c)
The induced armature voltage Ea.
The value of the load torque.
The efficiency of the motor.
To start the above motor a resistance will be inserted into its armature circuit.
d)
f)
What should be the value of this resistance to limit the starting current to 50% of the
rated armature current? What is the electrical starting torque at this condition?
What is the steady-state speed of the motor with the inserted resistance you calculated in
part d?
What is the name of the speed control used above?
