Lunch/RecessforElementarySchoolStudents:

Grades1Through4

TheDistrictbelievesthatitisessentialthatelementaryagedstudentsingrades1
through4haveaminimumof20minutesofseatedlunchtimetoprovidestudents
withsufficienttimetoeatlunchandenjoysocializationwiththeirfellowstudents.

The District requires elementaryaged students in grades 1 through 4 to


participateinaminimumof20minutesofrecesseachschooldayeitherdirectly
before or directly after their lunch period. The recess period shall be outside,
exceptinthecaseofextremeweatherconditions,inasafeoutdoorareawithplay
equipmentdesignatedforthatpurpose.Recessshallbeinadditionto,andnota
substitute for, physical education class. Recess shall be supervised but shall
largely consist of unstructured play time. Scheduling shall be conducted at the
schoolandclassroomlevel.

Since the District believes it is important that students have both a 20minute
seated lunchtime and a 20minute outdoor recess, the lunch periods for all
elementaryschoolswillbeaminimumof45minutes.Theadditional5minutes
accounts for incidental time spent walking to the cafeteria, waiting in line to
obtainahotlunch,andtimespentwalkingtoandfromtheoutdoorplayarea.

TheSuperintendentshallestablishprocedurestoimplementthispolicy.
