Discussion and Conclusion Travel Speed

The document summarizes a vehicle travel speed survey conducted by a group of students at MAEPS, Serdang Selangor, Malaysia. The group chose to conduct the survey in front of the MAEPS main gate as the location provided good visibility and traffic flow during non-peak hours. Over 200 vehicles were surveyed to collect speed data traveling in both directions. Analysis of the data found maximum and minimum speeds recorded, as well as mean, median and percentile speeds. Most vehicles were found to travel under the 60km/h speed limit. The data distribution was left-skewed, indicating most vehicles traveled at lower speeds. The survey objectives were achieved and the group gained experience in traffic surveying and teamwork.

Discussion:

For our group, we need to conduct the surveying at MAEPS, Serdang Selangor. In front of the
MAEPS main gate, there is a traffic system that is the most suitable location for us to conduct
this Vehicle Travel Speed Survey. There are several factors that made this location is the most
appropriate choice to conduct this survey. Firstly, as we did this survey around 9 am until 11
am, by that time, the traffic is not so busy as it is not during the peak hour. So, we can do the
survey job easily and efficiently. Besides, this road also had big dimension. As the road is wide,
we can stand beside the road without worrying any vehicles that passed by. So, our progress
during this surveying session worked out efficiently. Although this travel speed survey that
needed 200 vehicles to complete the data, as every member our group gave their best, 200
vehicles felt just like a couple of glances. Furthermore, this road also is not the only road for
the road users to go through to SKVE highway, Hospital Serdang, Faculty of Medicine, IOI
city mall and so on. Compared to other road traffic system around UPM, this is the most
suitable location for us to do this surveying job to complete our lab task. We did our utmost
job in order to get the most precise data so that we can do the analysis accurately.

From the data that have been collected, we made an analysis in order for us to interpret
and study the traffic pattern at this designated location. There are two directions of the vehicles
travelling which are from Hospital Serdang to UPM and UPM to Hospital Serdang, To
calculate the velocity of the vehicle, the distance travelled (100 m) needs to be divided by time
taken. But for this data analysis, the unit of speed of the vehicles need to be changed into km/h.

For the direction UPM to Hospital Serdang, maximum speed recorded, it is 25.19 km/h
while for the minimum speed it is 8.55 km/h. Moreover, the speed range interval is 16.64 km/h.
Meanwhile, for Hospital Serdang to UPM, its maximum speed measured is 22.57 km/h and the
minimum speed is 8.16 km/h. The speed range interval is 14.41 km/h. With these figures, it
can be deduced that the notable trend for the speed of the vehicles is from the direction UPM
to Hospital Serdang. Then we convert this data into a cumulative data whereas we be able to
acquire the mean speed, median speed, as well as all the three percentiles (15th, 50th and 85th).
After that, we constructed a graph of the cumulative frequency against the speed of vehicles
class.

Hence, by looking the speed of the vehicles of no.1 to vehicles no.100, the reading of
the 15th percentile is 12.38 km/h. As for the next 50th and 85th percentiles, the readings are 16
km/h and 20 km/h respectively. Then, the mean speed of the vehicles travelling from both
directions are 15.80 km/h and 16.9 km/h. For this location, the vehicle speed limit is 60 km/h,
but then, not even a single vehicle drove above the speed limit. We can see that most of the
road user still drive under the speed limit which shows that the driver is very ethical to obey
the traffic rules. From the table of cumulative data, all the road users drove below 60 km/h.
This indicates that, our driver still cares for their selves and also for the others. They still have
the conscience that if they drive beyond the speed limit, they will put their life and the other’s
life at stakes which can costs a life. Next, from the graph plotted above, it is a left-skewed data
distribution. Again, this visualized that most of the road users drove under the speed limit along
this straight road either from UPM to Hospital Serdang as well as Hospital Serdang to UPM.

The reasons why the minimum speed is only 8.55 km/h (at most) is that the vehicle
probably start their journey from the entrance of MAEPS to go either to the right (Hospital
Serdang) or to the left (UPM). As they just to accelerate and entered the specified location area,
we then recorded it, so it is why the value of its speed is low. During the surveying session,
there is no supercars passed by this road. So that is why for the maximum speed, it is recorded
only 25.19 km/h (at most). During that day, just common type of vehicles that go through along
this road during that time. With that, the data reading did not fluctuated much.

Although there is road bump just before the T-junction, road user only slowed down
their vehicles just for a while. As the passed over the road bump, they started to step on their
pedal to continue speeding up their pace. Moreover, during that particular time, fewer vehicles
were available, this is just another reason why the road user tend to speed up their vehicles but
again they did not exceeded the speed limit which is nice.
Jabatan Kerja Raya Malaysia (JKR) needs to do some improvement as well as some
modifications to improve this traffic system along this road. For example, more road bump
should be built at the straight road which is heading to MARDI, this will help the drivers to
slow down their vehicles as soon as they see the road bumps. This is very effective method.
Next AES camera also needs to be set up beside the road. As drivers did not want to pay the
summon, surely, they will slow down the speed of their vehicle straight away after they know
that there is AES camera recording their driving speed. Lastly, motivational road signs also
need to be set up clearly for the user to encourage them to drive safely and not surpassing the
speed limit.

Lastly, there are also some errors that may occurred during this surveying was carried
out. Firstly, the time taken when the vehicle starts entering the range of the 100 m distance may
not synchronize with the time recorded. This will affect the data that we have recorded. In order
to counter this problem, we need to set up a video camera for a standby purpose so that this
problem will not happen. Next the distance recorded for 100 m must be accurately measured
in order to achieve better outcomes. Last but not least, more data should have been taken in
order for us to get more accurate results. This surveying session can be called as a success as
we be able to complete this task on time and we did not encounter any difficulties during the
process of this case study.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the objectives of this experiments have been achieved as we did this surveying
correctly. Although there might be some errors during the whole process of this case study,
luckily, that small errors did not spoil the whole outcome of this surveying session. With this
survey, we as a future engineer, had learned lot of things during and after conduct this survey.
We can experience on how the engineers did their best in order to serve for the community.
We are thankful for that. Next, we also be able to enhance our teamwork skills during
conducting this survey. In this World, there are certain things that we just cannot do it alone.
Same goes to this survey task. Even the engineer also did this kind of survey in group of their.
As they know, two heads are better than one. Beside that, we also be able to recall statistic that
we learned last semester and also during the high school. This statistic is very useful and
important for us as it really help us on doing the analysis for our data. For example, we did the
calculation to find the mean speed, median speed, the 15th, 50th and 85th percentile as well as
the graph. These things are very crucial for us to produce the data and analyse them efficiently.
In general, we can say that this surveying task is a success since all the objectives have been
achieved.
