6 E-learning
Learning Outcomes
Understand E-learning concepts and how it is executed
Practise E-learning technology-based tools
E-Learning Overview
E-learning stands for electronic learning. This means one can use e-learning technologies in
order to pursue his/her studies via internet. In e-learning environment, notes, assignments
and exams are executed online only.
Two forms of E-Learning;
a) Part-time Distance Learning
b) Full-time Distance Learning
Features of E-Learning
E- Learning is self-paced land, thereby providing students with a chance to speed up
or slow down as necessary.
E-Learning is self-directed. This allows students to choose content and tools
appropriate to their differing interests, needs, and skill levels.
It accommodates multiple learning styles using a variety of delivery methods geared
to different learners; more effective for certain learners.
It allows students to study at anytime regardless of the place they may be.
It is accessible 24/7, thus allowing more students to attend classes and make
schedules easy
Travel time and associated costs (parking, fuel, vehicle maintenance) are reduced or
eliminated
Overall student costs are frequently less (tuition, residence, food, child care)
Fosters greater student interaction and collaboration
Fosters greater student/instructor contact
Enhances computer and Internet skills
Benefits of E-Learning
a) It's cost effective and saves time: It reduce travel time, travel costs to attend
traditional classes, though still enhancing productivity.
b) Learning 24/7, anywhere: Most traditional classes operate only within
normal office hours, but with e-learning students have the opportunity to study at
anytime regardless of their location.
c) It's discreet: Not everybody feels comfortable learning in a large group,
especially if they find something difficult to understand, so e-learning allows
students to tackle the subject at their own pace, with interactive tasks being set in
place to ensure a thorough understanding throughout each module.
d) Convenience and Portability: Courses are accessible on your schedule and e-
learning does not require physical attendance. It is accessible at anytime this
allows students to read course materials online or download them for later use.
e) Cost and Selection: E-learning allows students to choose from a wide range of
courses to meet their needs. Types of certificates offered include; Certificate,
Diploma, Degree and Masters.
f) Greater Collaboration: E-learning with its interactive technology-based tools
makes collaboration amongst students much easier.
Disadvantages of eLearning
Technology dependent: learners need to have internet access in order to
successfully pursue their studies.
Material Incompatibility: Some materials designed for one particular system will
not function properly on another (for example, the Apple Macintosh and the
Windows PC).
Unsuitable for Certain Types of Learners: E-learning requires a high-level of
self-discipline and personal time management. E-Learners need to be highly self-
motivated to take full advantage of the medium as often the online learning
experience can be impersonal. Working through 'packaged' programmes can be
irritating.
Reliant of the Quality of the Content: it is too easy for some institutions to defer
the photocopying costs onto the learner by placing all lecture notes and course
handouts online. Such practices often mean that the course materials are in an
inappropriate format for online learning.
Reliant on Human Support: E-learning is still dependent on help on either the
course materials or the software.
Too Reliant on IT Skills: learners need to have sufficient skills in Information
Technology to properly use e-learning tools.
Disabilities: Students with visual or physical impairments may be disadvantaged.
