Assessment of A Structure

This document outlines the requirements for a coursework assessment report on the inspection of a structure. The report must: 1) Describe the location, function, and type of structure inspected in 5 sentences or less. 2) Explain the structural form and how it carries loads in 5 sentences. 3) Summarize the probable construction method and sequence in 5 sentences. 4) Detail any defects found during inspection, their likely causes and impact on durability, in 50 sentences or less. Suggest minor remedial work and design changes to improve durability.

Module ENGM033 Durability of Bridges and Structures

Unit 9 Coursework.

Sub-Unit 2 Part 2 - Assessment of a Structure.

Study element 3 Assessment Report.

Study time 8 hours

Having completed the visual inspection prepare a concise Assessment report covering:
a) Location, function and type of structure. [5]
b). Structural form and explanation of how the structure carries the required [5]
forces.
c). The probable method and sequence of construction. [5]
d). A summary of the defects recorded during the inspection - this should include [50]
any defects or other features related to the on going, and likely future,
durability of the structure. Comment on the likely causes of any deterioration
observed and any features of the design of the structure that increase or
decrease the likelihood of deterioration.
e). Remedial work - suggest any minor remedial work that you feel should be [10]
undertaken to secure the durability of the structure over the next 10 years. Pay
particular attention to work that might i). prevent existing deterioration from
continuing and ii). restore the structure to a better condition.
f). Suggested design changes - outline any minor modifications or other changes [15]
that you would make to the original design if you were to be asked to rebuild
the same structure today. Explain why you think the changes you suggest
would improve the overall durability of the structure. Comment on the likely
impact of the changes you suggest on both the initial cost and the future
maintenance costs. You may subsequently comment on whether you consider
the original choice of structural form and material type were appropriate
considering the location and exposure of the structure.
g). Appendices: i). Defect maps [5]
ii). Risk Assessment. [5]
