DETAILED LESSON PLAN
DLP No.: 14 Learning Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 1 Quarter: 2 Duration: 50 mins
Learning Adds mentally two-digit numbers and one-digit numbers with regrouping Code:
Competency/ies: using appropriate strategies M1NS-IId-28.2
Key Concepts/ To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers, express the 2-digit number into its expanded form.
Understandings to be Then mentally add the 3 numbers. Or it can be done by using the mental techniques learned.
Developed Emphasize to the pupils that adding mentally is adding without using paper and pencil or pen
1. Objectives
Knowledge Visualize adding 2-digit and 1-digit numbers with regrouping.
Skills Add mentally 2-digit and 1-digit numbers with regrouping.
Attitudes Cooperate in group activities.
Values Cooperate and enjoy in learning with others.
2. Content / Topic Adding Mentally Two-Digit Numbers And One-Digit Numbers With Regrouping Using Appropriate
Strategies
3. Learning Worktext page 22- A
Resources / Materials Squares or picture cards to represent objects, flashcards, roulette
/ Equipment
4. Procedures (indicate the steps you will undertake to teach to teach the lesson and indicate the no. of minutes
each step will consume)
Preparation 1. Drill addition with sums up to 18
5 minutes Spin the roulette and give the sum
2. Add numbers mentally using flashcards
3. What is your favorite color? Show boxes with yellow and blue colors.
Do you know how many boxes are yellow? are blue?
Let us read the problem and find out .
Presentation 1. Posing the problem
20 minutes Lala and Lora went to the store to buy colored boxes. Lala bought 18 yellow boxes.
Lora bought 9 blue boxes. How many colored boxes do they have altogether?
(Teacher will ask questions about the story problem)
2. Pupils may get the answer by applying what they already know about adding
numbers with regrouping.
Solution:
18
+9
--------
27
So, Lala and Lora have 27 boxes in all.
Encourage the pupils to use their picture cards or squares to show a solution
described in “Processing the solution” as a way to mentally get the answer. It
would be good if the pupils themselves can think of this solution
3. Ask: How did you get your answer? [We got the sum of 18 and 9 by adding
the numbers using regrouping.]
Say: We can also get the sum of 18 and 9 mentally. Let us visualize first. We want to add
18 and 9. Eighteen yellow boxes can be shown as 10 boxes and 8 boxes.
Take away 2 blue boxes from the 9 and add them to the 8 yellow boxes to
form another group of 10 yellow boxes. Seven blue boxes are left in the original
group of 9 blue boxes. The results are as shown.
How many colored boxes are there all in all? [There are 10 + 10 + 7 boxes, or 27
boxes in all.]
Focus on this idea:
To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers mentally, first express the 2- digit number into its
expanded form. Then mentally add the 3 numbers.
To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers mentally, use appropriate strategies like adding
doubles and near doubles with regrouping.
Applying the first idea to get the sum of 18 and 9, we have
18 + 9 = (10 + 8) + 9 since the expanded form of 18 is 10 + 8.
Then we have,
10 + 8 + 9 = 10 + (8 + 9)
= 10 + 17
= 27.
The second idea, 18 + 9 = add first the ones. 8 and 9 are near doubles and
can be added with regrouping. 8 + 9 is 17. Regroup 17 into 1 ten and
7 ones. Then add the numbers on the tens place.

4. To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers, express the 2-digit number into its expanded form.
Then mentally add the 3 numbers. Or it can be done by using the mental techniques
learned.
Emphasize to the pupils that adding mentally is adding without using paper and pencil or
Pen.
Practice Let the pupils do the group activity. Then discuss the answers.
10 minutes Find the sum using the first and second idea.
The first group who gives the correct answer wins.
1. 38 + 7 = ( 30 + 8) + 7 2. 38
= ___ + ( __+ __ ) + 7
= ___ + ____
= ______
5. Assessment (indicate whatever it is thru Observation and/or Talking/Conferencing to Learners and/or
Analysis of Learners’ Products and/or Tests)
Written Test Using show-me-board. Write the correct answer.
10 minutes The teacher will flash cards showing addition sentences.

+ 7 + 8
6. Assignment (indicate whether it is for Reinforcement and/or Enrichment and/or Enhancement of the day’s
lesson and/or Preparation for new lesson)
Preparation for new
lesson Answer your worktext page 22-A

7. Wrap-up / Remember:
Concluding Activity To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers mentally, first express the 2-
2minutes digit number into its expanded form. Then mentally add the 3
numbers.
To add 2-digit and 1-digit numbers mentally, use appropriate
strategies like adding doubles and near doubles with regrouping.
