Taganna, Renz - Task 9 - PROFED 104

1) Before COVID-19, pollution was a major problem that was damaging the environment. During lockdowns, the environment improved as there was less human activity and pollution. 2) As restrictions have eased, people are venturing out more and trash has increased again. The author proposes a community clean-up program called "Save Plastic Bottles" to reduce litter in their neighborhood. 3) Ecological literacy involves understanding ecosystems and using that knowledge to create sustainable communities. The author proposes promoting ecological literacy in schools to teach children to care for the environment from a young age.

Building and Enhancing New Literacies Across the Curriculum

Task 9

Ecological Literacy
Before the COVID-19 started, the atmosphere was polluted and unpleasant; the seashores were
filled with trash; the vivid green nature was gradually fading due to so much pollution. Things were
all fine before the global pandemic started, but little did we know, all of us were the ones who were
destroying the environment due to the undisciplined practices that we used to do (i.e. improper
waste disposal; cutting so much tree branches that serves as shade; cutting trees instead of planting
it; and the absence of conducting clean-up drive on every barangay).

COVID-19 have spread in no time, causing for every nation to have a lockdown practiced by every
individual who lives in a city, neighborhood, or province. Having this global pandemic caused or
played a major role on environmental changes. It somehow saved our planet, made it more peaceful
and made it more cleaner due to the absence of people outside of their house. All of that happened
when the virus was on surge.

Meanwhile, the said virus is now getting a few cases only, and that is because of the service of our
community frontliners on doing their best for all us to overcome this global pandemic. We also now
have our vaccines that is used to prevent from being infected by the virus. This happenings makes us
feel relieved and also causing us to feel complacent and less terrified to go outside of our house.
Thus, people started going outside more often, only wearing facemasks and face shields is a must.
The environment changed again, the presence of the people on the streets are back, and the trashes
scattered on the streets are back as well.

So, as a student from Leyte Normal University, under Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) course, I
came up with an idea. I plan to design a program that would reduce the risk of developing such
problems. A program that would benefit not only our own community, but to the world we live in as
well.

Clean-up Drive: "Save Plastic Bottles", this project aims to prevent our Barangay from being messy-
looking due to the littering and improper waste disposal of plastic bottles by the residents and the
people around the poblacion of Basey. In this way, we can help each other to clean the streets,
canals, front yards, and backyards to keep our community neat, clean, organized, and outstanding
among other barangays of the poblacion of Basey when it comes to cleanliness. Moreover, all this
plastic bottle that will be collected must be placed in the barangay's "Shoot that Kalat - Free Throw
Plastic Bottles" bottle trash container. By doing so, It'll be fun for the people to throw the plastic
bottles in the right place and keep the environment clean, and encourage them to save this bottles
for recycling.

"Cleanliness is next to orderliness", that's line of one of my elementary teachers taught us, so, I'm
passing it to the residents of Barangay Sulod, especially the youths, for them to pass it down to the
next generations. People of Barangay Sulod, let us stand together, act as one, and help each other
for the betterment of our community.

Ecological literacy or 'ecoliteracy' is the ability to understand the natural systems that make life on
earth possible. To be ecoliterate means understanding the principles of organization of ecological
communities (i.e. ecosystems) and using those principles for creating sustainable human
communities.

An ecologically literate society would be a sustainable society which did not destroy the natural
environment on which they depend. Ecological literacy is a powerful concept as it creates a
foundation for an integrated approach to environmental problems. Advocates champion eco-literacy
as a new educational paradigm emerging around the poles of holism, systems thinking,
sustainability, and complexity.

To promote this kind of literacy and make the people be ecologically literate, I came up with an idea
to conduct a campaign in an elementary school. This will be a very effective idea in promoting
ecological literacy, especially to the young brains of elementary students. What is this campaign all
about? It's all about promoting ecological literacy throughout the society. Thus, children will be
taught on how to take care of the environment and implant this idea in their minds that this matter
is a very essential matter for our planet. This idea isn't about teaching the children to be ecologically
literate, but to discipline them the right conduct inside the school and their classrooms.
