Area Problems for Grade 6 Math Class

This lesson plan teaches students to solve routine and non-routine problems involving squares and rectangles. It reviews finding the area of rectangles using length x width and the area of squares using side x side. Students practice by solving word problems about basketball courts, game boards, and gardens to find their areas. Their understanding is evaluated through additional area problems and they are assigned further practice in their textbook.

LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 6

I. OBJECTIVES:
a. Content Standards. The learners demonstrate…..
b. Performance Standards. The learner demonstrates…..
c. Learning Competencies.
At the end of 60 minute period, the grade six pupils should be able to:
1. Solves routine and non-routine problems involving squares and rectangle (M4ME-IVc-60)

II. SUBJECT MATTER/ Content

Topic: Solving routine and non-routine problems involving squares and rectangle
Reference: Soaring 21st Century Mathematics
Materials: Visual aids, Picture, chess board, Sky flakes cracker
Value: Being cooperative, patience in solving word problems

III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES:

A. Preliminary Activities

Teacher’s Activities Student/s Activities

1. Prayer

Class let us all stand up and let us pray. Panginoon, kami po’y nag
papasalamat sa araw na ito,
nawa’y gabayan ninyo po kami sa
araw na ito… Amen

2. Greetings

Good Morning Class Good morning Teacher

Eugene, good morning
classmates!

3. Drill/ Review
I have here a box with a role paper inside.
Inside the rolled paper is a choices between 2
items which is the sky flakes cracker and a
chessboard. Each of you will pick a rolled
paper in the box and get the area of the item
that you pick.

Are you ready Class? Yes we are!

Here are the length and width of the chess

board and a box of milk.

Chess board: Area:

Length = 16 cm Width = 16 cm Chess board = 256 cm 2

Sky Flakes Cracker = 32 cm 2

Sky Flakes Cracker:
Length = 8 cm Width = 4 cm
B. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation

Picture of Basketball court

What can you see in the picture class?

Yes, Ivan? A basketball player

Very Good! What else Jadeken? A basketball court

Right! What else Kyle? Ring

Class what shape is the court?

Yes, Abby? A rectangle sir

Very Good!

This Basketball player is Jerald, he always

practice shooting in the court. Let us help
him in his problem.

2. Presentation/Discussion

Jerald always practice shooting in the

court, the court measures 28 meters in long
and 15 meters wide. What is the area of the
court?

What is asked in the problem? The area of the court

What are the given facts? 28 meters long and 15 meters wide

What formula is needed to solve the Area=Length x Width

problem?
Very good! Now we will solve for
the area.

In finding the area of a rectangle.

We have these steps to be followed
1. Determine the measure of length and width
2. Apply the formula for the area of rectangle
Area = l x w
Area = 28m x 15m
Area = 420 m2

Going back to our problem, what is the answer? The area of the basketball court is 420 m 2

Another problem

Juan and Jane play Snake and

Ladder. The board of the snake and ladder
has the measure of 6 cm long and 6 cm
wide. What is the area of the board of
Snake and Ladder?

What shape is the board? A square sir!

What is asked, Abby? The area of the board of Snake and

Ladder

What are given, Carl? Measure of 6 cm long and 6 cm wide

What formula is needed to solve the problem, Allen? Area = Side x Side

Now let us solve for the area.

Find measure of the side of the board
What is the first step, Angela?
Good!

What is the second step? Apply the formula for the area of the
square

What is the answer, Clark? The area of the board is 36 cm 2

Yes, Sir!
Is this the final answer, Mark? .
Very good, so what is the final answer? 36 cm 2

Very Good!

Practice Exercises/Fixing Skills

I need 2 volunteers to answer the number

problems on the board.

Finding the area of a rectangle

whose length is 12 cm and width
9 cm.

Find the area of the square whose

side is 4 meters long.

3. Generalization
Based on our discussions, how do we
find the area of the rectangle? By multiplying its length and width
Yes, Angelo?

How about the area of the square.

Yes, Carl? By multiplying both of its side

Very Good!

4. Application

Do you want to play a game? Yes we

First move all the chairs in the side and do!

leave a space in the middle. All your going
to do is fall in line in this three chair and
choose the correct answer. Each chair will
be labeled as A, B, and C. We have a 4
problem those student who will get the high
score will get a 5 plus pint in the
performance.

A B C

Find the area of a rectangle of length 43 m and width 13 m. 559 m 2 359 m 2 759 m2

Find the area of a square that has a measure of 5 meters each side. 35 m2 55 m2 25 m2

Find the area of a square table that has a measure of

200 cm 2 400 cm 2 300 cm 2
20 cm each side.
The rectangle garden measures 10 m length
60 m2 40 m2 50 m2
and 5 meters wide.

IV. EVALUATION:

Directions: Find and solve for the area. Show your solution.

1. Find the area of a rectangle of length 30 m and with 12 m.

2. Find the area of a rectangle of length 40 cm and width 20 cm.
3. The side of the square glass measures 40 cm, Find the area.

V. ASSIGNMENT:
Answer “LET’S WORK TOGETHER” on page 493 on your book.

VI. Remarks.

VII. Reflection/s:
