The Dynamic Model
The Dynamic Model
Once the static model has been prepared, a dynamic model
will be developed.
Based upon the development of the reservoir characterization
and static model.
Accounts for fluid movement within the reservoir.

Definition
Upscaling: The process of using information at one length
scale in order to compute equivalent or effective properties at
a larger scale (Mansoori, 1994).
Need for Upscaling
We are generating reservoir descriptions at increasing smaller
scales (millions of cells)
Reservoir simulation technology and computing power limit
dynamic modeling to larger scales (thousands of cells)
Original Fine-Grid Geologic Model
Upscaled Coarse-Grid Dynamic Model
Upscaling Challenge
Objective is a coarse grid that produces same flow simulation
as fine grid
Best approach is to tie upscaling methodology to fine grid
model
Don’t want this tie because purpose is to avoid fine grid
simulations
Upscaling Methods
Approximations are required
Method should be consistent with geologic complexity
Most based on single-phase, steady-state flow
Should validate use in multiphase problems
Analytical and numerical methods available
Degree of Upscaling
Balancing required
Loss of accuracy due to averaging
Gain in computer speed with fewer cells
Don’t want to average away heterogeneity
Permeability is most important property
Important to capture extremes in upscaling
Upscaled Coarse-Grid Dynamic Model
Constructed property, the upscaled model:
1. Captures important reservoir heterogeneity and
2. Yields practical run times for the dynamic model
