This document presents a thesis proposal that aims to investigate the impact of online social networks on the academic performance of senior high school students at Jagobiao National High School. The researcher intends to use a mixed methods approach including interviews and observations to understand students' experiences with social media and how it affects their studies. While social networks provide communication and social support, excessive non-academic use can negatively impact students' focus, performance, and knowledge. THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In recent years, social networks have had a significant impact on students' academic

achievement. For students in a variety of areas, these networks present both opportunities and

risks in plenty. The researcher created and carried out this study due to social networking

addiction and its effects on students' academic performance, the study aims to determined

the impact of social networks in academic performance of senior high school students. Bhanot,

R. (2016).

Moreover, Triangulation Mixed Method Design was used to creatively integrate qualitative

approaches obtained from sampling and in-depth interviews of respondents. In this study,

students will aware about the proper using of  social networks and the effect of social networks

through their academic performance. In addition, according to other researchers aims the study to

investigate the validity of text in social media posts as an alternative to the manual data gathering

technique of collecting from the source to reduce overhead costs. To determine the impact of

social networks in students, child safety awareness about proper using on social networks

including the privacy concern of social networks services, cyberbullying, misinformation facts,

and social anxiety.  

The problem of the study is the social networks will affect to the students’ academic

performance, social networks is One of the most significant effects of excessive student who use

of social networking sites is decreased academic performance. According to the findings of a


study conducted on medical students, those who used social media and the internet more

frequently than the norm performed poorly academically and had trouble focusing in class

(Alezera, 2019).

Most students use social networks to find the answers to their questions; these networks

provide resources but using them will have an impact on students’ academic achievement,

because they anticipating the information on the internet, it will affect their knowledge and

confidence.

Moreover, the Social networks are an essential part of learning environments because they

provide as a major conduit for communication and a source of social support, but regarding to

the problem a lot of students was lack of awareness in proper using of social networks, many

students get addicted to social networks especially on online games, it has a lot of impact to their

focus on their studies.  

However, in many years since the social networks exist our regarding the quantitative and

qualitative growth of the internet, social networks, and the number of users, substantial changes

have occurred globally. Websites and mobile applications that enable social networking include

those that let users share information, thoughts, feelings, opinions, and personal, social,

and educational experiences, but not all in social networks information are true mostly in social

media.  

The study is design by qualitative research, that determine the experience of the students

through the impact of social networks on their academic performance, this research compose

research instrument by using observations and interviewing the respondents through face to face
interview to gather in-depth insights into a problem or generate new ideas for research. Students

academic performance.

However, the social networks is aims to connect with friends and family through using

internet usage. Social networking websites are not necessarily about meeting new people online,

although this does happen. Instead, they are primarily about connecting with friends, family

and acquaintances you already have in real life. The most well-known social networking sites are

Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Bebo. These sites allow you to share photos, videos and

information, organise events, chat, download music and even play games like Scrabble and

Chess online (Velasco, 2017).

Moreover, this study included objective, the goal of this research is to investigate the

impact of social networks in students academic performance and grant some awareness in proper

using of social networks to make students be more efficient on their academic performance.
