NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 and ISO 15156: FAQs

The documents
1. How do I know which are the latest editions of the three parts of
NACE MR0175/ISO 15156?

The latest editions of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 are the following:-

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-1 "General Principles for the selection of cracking-

resistant materials", published 2015

NACE MR0175/ISO 15156-2 "Cracking-resistant carbon and low alloy steels, and
the use of cast irons", published 2015

NACE MR0175/ISO15156-3 "Cracking-resistant CRAs (corrosion resistant

alloys) and other alloys", published 2015

The latest ISO versions of these standards have the same titles and dates.

2. Are NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 and ISO 15156 identical in their technical
content?

Yes.

3. Are you aware that the page numbering of NACE and ISO editions of the
standard sometimes differ?

Yes. Some differences arise between the ISO and NACE editions with respect to
the numbering of pages, however, the numbering of Clauses, Sub-clauses,
Figures, Tables, Etc. is the same.

4. How do these documents relate to previous editions of NACE MR0175?

The NACE/ISO documents replace all previous editions of NACE MR0175 and
NACE MR0175/ISO 15156.

5. How often will the parts of NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 be updated?

Normally full scale review and possible revision is considered on a five year cycle
though such a process can be undertaken at any time subject to the request of
ISO TC67 WG7.
Technical Circulars and Technical Corrigenda
1. What happens when amendments are required in the intervening period?

When a proposal for amendment is made this is considered in turn by the ISO
15156 Maintenance Panel, NACE TG 299 (the ISO 15156 Oversight Committee)
and by ISO TC67 WG7. Subject to the agreement of all these groups a
Technical Circular or a Technical Corrigendum is published.

2. What status does a Technical Circular or a Technical Corrigendum have?

A Technical Circular or a Technical Corrigendum forms an integral part of the

ISO standard to which it refers.

3. Are Technical Circulars and Technical Corrigenda incorporated into a

standard when it is revised?

The standards are subject to a full revision cycle, typically every five years. Any
published Technical Circulars and Technical Corrigenda will be incorporated in
the standard at this stage. They will then be subject to the same ISO review
process as the unchanged parts of the standards.

4. What is the difference between a Technical Circular and a Technical

Corrigendum?

They have the same technical status.

The establishment of the ISO 15156 Maintenance Agency in June 2007 enabled
the publication of Technical Circulars by the Secretariat of ISO TC67 WG7 at DIN
in Berlin. The charter for this Agency, approved by the ISO Technical
Management Board, can be found under Item 15 on the web site
www.iso.org/iso15156maintenance .

If required, Technical Corrigenda will be published by ISO/CS in Geneva.

The approach involving Technical Circulars allows a more rapid publication of

approved changes than can be achieved using Technical Corrigenda.

5. Where can Technical Circulars and Technical Corrigenda be obtained?

Access to all current Technical Circulars and Technical Corrigenda is available at

www.iso.org/iso15156maintenance under Item 03.
The role of the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel
1. Does the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel provide a consultancy service
concerning materials and their application in sour service?

No. The role of the Maintenance Panel is solely to ensure that ISO 15156 is clear
in its stated requirements and is kept up-to-date.

2. Can the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel provide advice on the use of
alternative materials not listed in the standard?

No. The ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel cannot advise on materials selection
issues.

3. Will the ISO 15156 maintenance Panel provide interpretations for earlier
editions of NACE MR0175 or NACE MR0175/ISO 15156?

No, NACE does not support the continued use of earlier editions of NACE
MR0175 or NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 and the ISO 15156 Maintenance Panel
can only provide interpretations for the latest editions of the NACE/ISO set of
standards.
