Competency/ies filtering, sieving and using magnet Code: S6MT-Id-f-2
:
Key Concepts /  Mixtures can be separated in different ways namely: picking, sieving, winnowing, filtering, funnel,
Understandings magnet, evaporation and sedimentation
to be  The methods to be used depend on the kinds of mixture to be separated
Developed:
1.Objectives

4. Procedures (indicate the steps you will undertake to teach the lesson and indicate the no. of minutes each step will
consume)
4.1.  Drill using flashcards on the different methods in separating mixture
Introductory
 Observe your mother prepare meals. What different ingredients did she use to cook food?
Activitties
( 7 minutes )

4.2. Activity Can you separate the different substances that form a mixture?
( 20 minutes ) Activity 1. Separating solids
In this activity, teacher combined three different kinds of solids such as uncooked rice, mongo and
palay. Put these substances together in a dish and mix them well with your fingers. Pick up the grains
of rice and place them on a container. Do the same with mongo and palay seeds. ( A mixture of grains
can be separated by picking. )
Can you separate a mixture of sand and water?

Activity 2. Separating Sand from Mongo Seeds

Get a scoop of sand and a scoop of mongo seeds. Mix the sand and mongo seeds. Pass the mixture
through a cheesecloth. Observe what happens. ( This method of separating mixtures is called sieving).

Activity 3.Separating Iron Filings from Sand

Get some fine iron filings. Mix them with sand. Hold a magnet over the mixture. Observe what
happens.( A magnet attract the iron and it separates the iron filings from the sand)

Activity 4. Separating Mud from Water

Get a scoop of mud and mix it with water. Stir thoroughly. Sit the muddy water left undisturbed for a
few hours to allow mud to settle at the bottom. ( The method of separating the components of a
mixture is called decantation )

Activity 5. Separating Salt from Water

Fill half a glass with water. Put a tablespoonful of salt particles in the water. Stir it. Place the mixture in
a beaker and heated for few minutes until water evaporates. ( The process of separating mixture is
known as evaporation )
4.3. Analysis How do you find the activity?
( 3 minutes ) 1. Can you easily separate mixture?
2. What technique is used in activity 1? 2 ? 3 ? 4? 5 ?
3. What are the different techniques in separating mixtures?
4. What should be done in separating mixture especially to those activity that involves heat?
4.4. The teacher will give inputs on the following:
Abstractions
( 5 minutes )  There are many methods to separate mixtures. Some of these methods are filtration, use of magnets,
decantation, and evaporation, picking and sieving.
 The methods to be used depend on the kinds of mixture to be separated.
4.5. Group Activity:
Applications
( 20 minutes ) Group the pupils into 5 groups.
Each group will perform on the different activity shown by the teacher. Each group will take turns until
they will be able to complete all the activitie
4.6 Assessment (indicate whether it is thru Observation and/ or Talking/conferencing to learners and/or Analysis of
Learners’
Products and/or Tests) ___5___minutes

Test 1 :Show pictures to the class. Ask the pupil to identify the technique to be used in separating them.

4. 7. 10.

2. 5. 8.

3. 6. 9.

Test II. Write at least 5 benefits of separating mixture.

4.7 Assignment (indicate whether it is for Reinforcement and/or Enrichment and/or Enhancement of the day’s lesson and/or
