2. PA/GA Description
IMCOS Public Address and General Alarm is a critical system that during an emergency situation allows safe
evacuation from the vessel or the facility; it is a part of the security systems required by relevant bodies.
IMCOS alarms and announcements can be initiated either manually from the dedicated panels or
automatically from external alarm systems like Fire Detection, leakage or CCTV that are connected to the main
system. Announcements can be also initiated by the means of the PBX paging function using dedicated
telephone extensions or using pre-recorded announcements stored in a Digital Memory Bank unit.
2.1 Architecture
The PA/GA system is divided in different zones that can be accessed separately in case of alarms
announcements in designated areas or routine announcements/background music, in case of emergency call
or alarms all loudspeakers and beacons are engaged and any other announcement is overridden.
Loudspeakers are connected to the amplifiers fitted into the main system units; loudspeakers’ loops are
duplicated in order to achieve system redundancy: each zone will have loudspeakers connected to
independent loops, their quantity and location is determined during engineering process in order to have a
clearly audible message even in case of fault of one of the loops.
Loudspeakers and beacons distribution is realized to match the requirements in place described by normative
like IMO SOLAS 808.
Varying on the construction characteristics loudspeakers will be driven by different types of power amplifiers;
moreover IMCOS features a hot standby capability that ensures the automatic swap to a spare amplifier in
case of a fault.
By the means of the alarm panels announcements can be sent only in designated areas or, in case of
emergency call, in every zone covered by loudspeakers.
By the means of the alarm panels a pre-recorded announcement can be sent to designated areas; audio tracks
are stored in a DMB (Digital Memory Bank) and can be customized according to customer’s requirements.
If the system features a paging from PBX, announcements can be performed also using enabled extensions
dialing a specific code.
IMCOS is fully redundant: in case of fault of a system single component, main features, that are required in
case of emergency, are granted by audio lines double loop and master/backup working mode of both
controller and main control unit.
The system is powered by redundant power supplies, an optional embedded UPS can be installed as well as
external UPS devices dimensioned to ensure vital functions for the time necessary to evacuate the zones.
Where required the main unit can be deployed in the same location or installed in different location to gain
geographical redundancy. This is the diagram: Figure 13. Geographical redundancy replicates the system in
two different locations in order to grant the basic functionalities in case of complete failure of one of the units.
In normal conditions unit “A” (Figure 14) carries out all PA/GA function and also manages the amplifiers and
loudspeaker connected to unit “B” (Figure 15), in case of failure of unit “A” the other unit keeps working
independently and takes charge of all the PA/GA functions. In this case loudspeaker redundancy is performed
with audio loops from the two units.
The controller is equipped with different PCBs, each one for a different feature and it is split in two parts,
Master and Backup, in order to grant system redundancy: it switches automatically to the backup part in case
of fault of any master part component including the master main processor unit.
IMCOS 3002 is a metal box containing IMCOS PCB support, IMCOS 7S, IMCOS connector with 7 slots and
IMCOS 7P. IMCOS 3002 is designed to contain the boards dedicated to the most important system tasks such
as General of fire alarm. The layout of this controller can be seen at this link: Figure 16.
When geographical redundancy is required it is possible to install two IMCOS 3002 Controllers: in this way the
system will have one controller for master and another one for backup.
The unit is designed according to fail-safe philosophy with the following characteristics:
Microprocessor operated controller;
Non-volatile memory;
34 inputs from internal or external sources;
34 outputs relay driven – fail safe configuration;
2 RS-232/RS-485 serial communication ports for digital connection with peripherals and for
system programming.
The modules installed inside the controller and talk back provide pre-amplification for incoming signals that
are sent to the power amplifiers.
Two different types of power amplifiers provide the power for all the loudspeakers.
Main features:
Dual Power supply: 220 V A.C. 50/60 Hz. & 24 V D.C. / 300 VA
Power ON/OFF switch.
Forced ventilation (by two separate fans) thermostat controlled Temp. 70 °C
Output Voltage: 100 V
Audio Input: 1 Jack 6,3 mm – 150 mV – 600 Ohms
Dedicated thermo-stabilized circuit which supplies an electric insulated contact to drive eventual
external/remote alarm devices.
Internal Line Monitoring Board, IMCOS 2000, which performs continuous checking of the
functionality of IMCOS 150.
Peak indicator.
A dedicated series of loudspeakers are available for hazardous areas: different installation areas are covered
by a range of products corresponding to the main international directives concerning the safety in explosive
atmosphere such as ATEX, GOST and UL for up to Zone 2 EEx d IIC T6.
All loudspeakers are equipped with a self-resetting fuse in order to keep the audio line working in case of short
circuit.
The units are programmable separately for the different areas; an explosion proof version for O&G installation
is available.
3.1 Features
Talk Back system can be used for point to point communications or for conference calls between main remote
panel and multiple substations.
The operator panel is the same for the PA/GA, separated IMCOS 7001 can access to different Talk Back
substations if required. Remote panels can be installed in various locations and can be set to communicate
with different substations each.
The Talk Back system can be interfaced with the PA/GA system: if required alarms and emergency
announcements can be heard through loudspeakers and headphones of the substations.
3.2 Equipment
Talk back system is composed by a dedicated modular board equipped with different PCB’s according to the
number of substations; Talk Back system can manage different types of substations: reversible loudspeakers,
boxed substations equipped with microphones and loudspeakers or headsets or can be integrated with the
panels of the PA/GA.
According to the requirements the unit can be equipped with amplifier, preamplifier and dedicated relay
boards for each talk back substations.
The alarm monitor also gathers the information from other monitoring devices. The device can be connected
to external monitoring device and features free outputs for external automations.
The device works in failsafe mode: In case of fault speaker lines will keep working normally; in case of
announcement Line Monitor suspends the checking activity as long as the speakers lines are engaged.
A TV system including satellite antennas, modulation and distribution of free to air and pay per view contents
using analog cable structures or LAN based technologies that leverages on a dedicated data LAN or a pre-
existing one to broadcast audio/video contents.
Engineering is dedicated to each different system with distribution of devices on the plant.
Terrestrial antenna is provided for free to air and digital TV contents reception.
It is suitable for driving electric slave clock network with forward and backward facilities.
Master clock is equipped with 2 output signals, 1 for UTC and 1 for LT with accuracy ± 0.2 sec. per months. The
system has different types of slave clocks according to their location e.g.: waterproof clocks, clock with silence

There are several types of main unit with different performances as shown in the following table
Override Function: override function allows a third party to send an announcement tone in
the called party in order to receive a high priority, implying that the call is very important.
Paging Function: paging functionality is required for at least four different zones.
Class of Service: class of service is a parameter used in data and voice protocols to
differentiate the types of payloads contained in the packet being transmitted. The objective of
such differentiation is generally associated with assigning priorities to the data payload or
access levels to the telephone call. It is necessary to manage the class of service to prioritize
voice in non-dedicated data networks.
Creation and management Groups: PBX can manage different groups of extensions.
Hunt: hunt groups are used to efficiently distribute calls into a group. If the first extension
doesn’t answers the call, it will be transferred to the next extension of the hunt group, if also
the second extension is not answering the call then it will be transferred to the following and
so on until an extensions of the group answers the call or all the group is hunted.
Link Pair: It is required to joint two or more telephones to the same extensions. All the
telephones will ring at once and stop when the one answers.
Caller Id facility: The caller id function can be activated on all telephones that have
implemented this feature both analog and IP.
H323 Protocol: H323 protocol is available to the system for PXB CONTROL telephones as for
trunk lines. System can be connected with other PBX by means of this protocol.
QSig Protocol: system can manage the QSIP Protocol to get connected with other PBX.
Analog FXS Port: PBX can accept FXS connections to be used as extensions or as trunk lines.
ISDN PRI E1/T1 Standards: PBX can accept ISDN PRI connection to be used as extensions or as
trunk lines. ISDN E1 and T1 ISDN can be used without distinction.
ISDN BRI: PBX can accept ISDN BRI connection to be used as extensions or as trunk lines.
7.3.3 Terminals
The PBX can manage analog and digital phones via dedicated PSTN network.
• Muting button;
• Speakerphone;
• Headset connector;
• ROHS Certification;
• LVD Certification;
• CE Certification.
7.3.4 Interfaces
Interface for PA: PA system will be interfaced to paging system through a voice channel and a
dry contact, one per zone (at least four).
Up to 23 extensions can be connected and the conversation can last up to 15 minutes with a full charge. The
telephones can be equipped with headset and microphone.
Self-Powered Telephones are also available for Hazardous Areas with appropriate Intrinsically Safe models.
They can be integrated with SPT telephones in order to create “Hybrid” safety networks.

IMCOS system's adaptability is attributed to its modular design, enabling configurations tailored to customer specifications. Customized alarm tones can be generated by IMCOS 1000 PCB, and the system supports designated area announcements via versatile alarm panels. Its expansibility, up to 64 speaker lines, permits scalable deployment, perfectly fitting unique client needs while ensuring compliance with international norms .
The IMCOS system integrates entertainment functionalities with emergency systems by using the same audio lines for both background music and emergency announcements. Volume regulators can locally adjust music levels, but are overridden during alarms . Video content is distributed using a dedicated or existing data LAN, which interfaces with audio/video media, seamlessly integrating entertainment without compromising emergency capabilities .
Geographical redundancy in IMCOS involves replicating the system across two different locations, allowing continuous operation if one unit fails. In normal conditions, unit 'A' carries out all functions and manages amplifiers connected to unit 'B'. Should unit 'A' fail, unit 'B' independently assumes all functions, thus enhancing system robustness and ensuring critical operation even in complete unit failure scenarios .
The Talk Back system enables focused communication within the IMCOS infrastructure by allowing point-to-point and conference call capabilities between main and remote panels, which is crucial for coordinating activities in specific areas . It interfaces with the PA/GA system, so alarms and emergency announcements can be transmitted through substations, amplifying its role in emergency situations .
The alarm monitoring system in IMCOS ensures operational status by constantly checking the state of each component, displaying real-time status changes, and providing audible alerts for power loss, amplifier faults, and issues with control units . It is connected to external monitoring devices and allows for external automations through free outputs .
The IMCOS system uses audio/visual columns equipped with enlightened pictograms, dedicated sirens, and LED flashing lights to facilitate one-way communication in noisy environments. These devices conform to IMO/SOLAS rules and are designed for effective alert dissemination. An explosion-proof version is available for O&G installations, ensuring safe and reliable communication in hazardous atmospheres .
The status check and fault notification feature enhances safety by providing continuous real-time monitoring of system components, alerting users to power loss, amplifier faults, or control unit issues instantly. The alarm monitor lists these statuses visually and audibly, ensuring prompt addressing of issues. It also synchronizes with external devices enabling automated corrective actions, minimizing operational risk .
The IMCOS system ensures redundancy and reliability through several mechanisms. Each zone is equipped with loudspeakers connected to independent loops, ensuring audible messages even if one loop fails . The system also features hot standby capability for seamless switching to a spare amplifier in case of a fault . Geographical redundancy allows the system to operate from two separate locations, maintaining basic functionalities if one unit fails . Moreover, an optional UPS is available to power vital functions during emergencies .
The IMCOS system complies with various international safety standards for hazardous environments by providing products designed for use in explosive atmospheres. It adheres to ATEX, GOST, and UL directives, supporting up to Zone 2 EEx d IIC T6 . Additionally, installed components such as loudspeakers come with self-resetting fuses to maintain functionality during short circuits .
The IMCOS 3002 controller is crucial for managing the PA/GA system within IMCOS. It handles announcement priorities, alarm tone management, and interfaces with audio signals from the PBX. The controller is equipped with various PCBs, each dedicated to a specific feature, ensuring comprehensive management of communication and safety alerts .
