1. The Fermi level for potassium is 2.1eV. Calculate the velocity of
the electron at the Fermi level.

Solution:-

We have the formula, 𝐸 𝐹 = 1/ 2 𝑚𝑣 𝐹 2

Therefore, 𝑣 𝐹 = ( 2𝐸 𝐹 /𝑚 )1/2

= (2 × 2.1× 1.602 × 10−19 /9.11 × 10−31) 1/ 2

𝑣 𝐹 = 8.6 × 10 5 𝑚/𝑠.

2 . Evaluate the Fermi function for energy KBT above the Fermi energy.

3. The Fermi temperature of a metal is 24600 K. Calculate the Fermi velocity.

4. Use the Fermi distribution function to obtain the value of F(E) for E – EF =
0.01 eV at 200K.

5. Calculate the probabilities for an electronic state to be occupied at 20°C, if the
energy of these states lies 0.11 eV above and 0.11 eV below the fermi level.

Hence T=

2. At what temperature we can expect a 10% probability that electrons in silver have an energy
which is 1% above the Fermi energy? The Fermi energy of silver is 5.5eV.
Given Data
F(E) = 10% = 0.1
EF = 5.5eV
E = EF+ = (5.5 + 0.055) = 5.555 eV
Hence E – EF = 0.055 eV = 0.0551.610 – 19 J
Solution:-
We know the probability function is given by 1
F (E) 

, or, 0.1 
1  exp( E  E F / kT )  0.055  1.6  10 19 

 637.7 

Hence , T   = 290 K
