(iii) Section-C is compulsory.
Section –A (Attempt any five questions) 30 Marks
(Each question carries 6 marks)

1. What is meant by an ensemble? Discuss the microcanonical, and canonical ensembles.

2. In a system in thermal equilibrium at absolute temperature T, two states with energy

difference 4.8310-21 occur with relative probability e2. Deduce the temperature.
(Given: k = 1.3810-23 Joule/K).

3. Show that for an ideal monatomic gas the absolute value of entropy is given by-

𝑛h ⌊
𝑆 = 𝑛𝑘log𝑒 𝑉3(2𝜋𝑚𝑘𝑇) 2

4. Calculate the Fermi energy in electron volt for sodium assuming that it has one free
electron per atom. (Given: density of sodium = 0.97gm/cm3, atomic weight of
sodium=23).

5. What do you mean by partition function? Express Helmholtz free energy (F) and
entropy (S) in terms of the partition function.

6. Give the postulates of the Bose-Einstein statistics? Derive the Bose-Einstein

distribution formula.
