happen if we don’t know how to describe a thing?

Let the students read the following statements.
1. Mr. Jose Reyes as the PTCA president, who is about to deliver a speech,
who wears a yellow polo shirt, and who has a long hair and beard and mustache.
2. Mr. Jose Reyes as the PTCA president, who is about to deliver his
speech, appears like a homeless person in his untidy clothes and unshaved faced.
Ask the students, “What do you observe in the two statements?”.
The teacher will discuss objective vs. subjective description and the
elements.

Concept Notes:
Description is one of the main rhetorical patterns. It creates a mental
image of a thing, a person or character, or an event.
Remember: You need to activate your senses all the time to be able to
describe.
Subjective VS. Objective Description in writing you need to decide
whether you need to describe objectively or subjectively. Describe not just for the
sake or describing; you need to have a purpose. It will reveal your point of view
towards the subject.
Most Common Descriptive Words and Phrases
Adjectives are words that describe noun and pronouns. They can be
common (e.g., beautiful, tremendous, and gigantic) or proper (e.g., Philippines,
Canadian).
Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Various pieces of information that can be described using adverbs:
Manner by which an action was done
Place where the action was done
Time when an action was done
Frequency by which an action is done
Degree to which a description is true
Sensory Words as the name implies, refers to word that appeal to or can
relate to the senses. They help make an impression on people and imagine what is
being describe.
Figurative Language refers to the use of words in a way that deviates
from the conventional order and meaning to convey a complicated meaning, colorful
writing, clarity, or evocative comparison.
Simile: That woman is as beautiful as the rose.
Hyperbole: The pizza is topped with truckloads of cheese.
Context where Description is Used
1. For informative/explanatory purposes.
2. For persuasive purposes.
3. For analytical purposes.
4. For expressive purposes.
Ask the students, “Why is description an essential pattern of development?”.
