The Impact of Social Media on Humanity
Nowadays, almost everyone has their own social media accounts, including children, teenagers, and
adults. Is this a positive sign for future generations?
Firstly, platforms like TikTok and Instagram feature short videos (known as "reels" on Instagram) that
people often share with their friends. These videos typically last between 30 seconds to a minute. While this
can be entertaining, statistics from Instagram reveal that 60% of users spend more than 30 minutes watching
reels.
Excessive viewing of these short videos can have negative consequences. First, it can lead to vision
problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, due to prolonged exposure to blue light from screens.
Second, it can foster addiction. Many find these videos more engaging than socializing in real life, which
can lead to neglecting family and friends, resulting in feelings of isolation.
Secondly, social media can contribute to cyberbullying. While it offers users the freedom to comment
and share posts, many misuse this freedom. Although everyone has the right to free speech, some individuals
choose to mock, insult, or prank others online. Recently, 56% of respondents in a survey reported
experiencing cyberbullying, with 45.9% of those being teenagers. The effects of cyberbullying can lead to
various mental health issues, including anxiety about one's appearance and social anxiety. Unfortunately,
many bullies are often unaware that their actions are harmful, believing they are justified.
Thirdly, the freedom of speech on social media can lead to the spread of misinformation. Users can
easily circulate fake news, making it challenging to determine what is true. The rapid dissemination of false
information increases the likelihood that people will believe and share it, potentially leading to social unrest.
Despite these negative impacts, social media can also offer significant benefits when used responsibly.
First, social media serves as a great source of information. It allows people to stay updated on global
events with just a few taps. Users can explore various topics by searching with hashtags.
Additionally, social media provides a means to connect with friends. Users can chat in groups, call, or
share updates about their lives, helping to strengthen friendships.
Moreover, social media fosters communication and relationships by connecting users with others who
share similar interests or goals. This can help improve social skills and lead to new friendships with people
from around the world.
Finally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many schools adopted online classes. Teachers have
increasingly used engaging learning methods to attract students, making education more effective than
traditional classes in some cases. This approach enables learning from anywhere and nurtures self-directed
study skills, making education more accessible to anyone with a smartphone and internet connection.
