A Garden in the City


How do you grow fresh vegetables in the middle of a city? It is possible in a community
garden—a special area in a city for a vegetable garden. There are community gardens in cities
all over the world, from Toronto, Canada, to Barcelona, Spain, and Bangkok, Thailand.
In the United States, community gardens are becoming popular in many cities. For
example, in Washington, D.C., there are more than 30 community gardens. The biggest
garden is the Newark Street Community Garden. The garden is over 40 years old. It has more
than 200 members.
Each member of the Newark Street Community Garden has an area of land called a plot.
Every spring, the gardeners work together and prepare their garden plots. Each gardener
chooses their vegetables. Some choose lettuce, cabbage, spinach, peas, broccoli, cucumbers,
peppers, or tomatoes. In addition to vegetables, the garden also has fruit trees and bushes. For
example, the garden has peaches, apples, raspberries, and blackberries. The members enjoy
having fresh ingredients for their favorite dishes.
The Newark Street Community Garden is an active community with friendly people.
There is a children's garden area, and there are places to play softball or soccer. Gardeners
often have community dinners and picnics. They share information about growing produce¹.
Many people enjoy the fresh and healthy produce from the community garden.

adjectives
Read and learn more about using more and less with adjectives. Then complete
the sentences with more or less plus an adjective.

Using more and less with adjectives

Use more or less with adjectives to compare two things. Use this form with most adjectives
that have two or more syllables. (Im•por•tant has three syllables.)

More or less goes before the adjective. Usually the word than + a noun or pronoun goes after
the adjective.
