Initial information:
Crochet terminology: US
Tools:
• A 4mm and 7mm crochet hook
• Yarn thickness: Dk, around 160g of dk yarn for size M. Gauge for 4mm hook: 10cm x 10cm
is 28 rows and 22 stitches (this is on the label of the yarn I used which is Kingcole pricewise
double knit)
• Scissors and yarn needle
Two different coloured yarns:
In this pattern I will use white as my main colour (colour 1) and green as the second colour
(colour 2)
Abbreviations:
dc = double crochet
hdc = half double crochet
st (s) = stitch(es)
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
to = turn over
Main row = maintenance row
Inc row = increase row
Below is how I write my pattern instructions :)
e.g. 20 x 1dc = place 1dc in each stitch for 20 stitches
e.g. 6 x 2dc = place 2dc in each stitch for 6 stitches
- Anything in *stars* means to repeat it until the end of the row.

- Refer to the photos below each set of instructions

Construction of the skirt

Before beginning the skirt, I have summarised the pattern instructions to allow
for a good understanding of the pattern. Each number aligns with the numbers
in the diagram below this list.

1. First, the waistband is made, based on two measurements that we take

around our upper waist (A) and lower waist (B). You can still wear it around
your upper waist as you can adjust the tie at the end, or wear it low-waisted
as it stretches. The reason you have to measure the lower waist is so that
when you make the skirt it will allow for stretching so you can pull it over your
legs and hips.
2. Then we do a row of hdc under the band, which is the first row of the body of
the skirt. We do it in a different colour (here it’s grey) as it compliments the
frills that we create later.
3. Then we change back to the main, original colour (same colour as the band)
and do 6 “maintenance” rows with the larger 7mm hook. Maintenance rows
are rows in which we do 1dc in each stitch.
4. Then we create 1 increase row, 1 maintenance row and 1 increase row. 1
increase row consists of *1 x 2dc, 1 x 1dc*, repeating this for the entire row.
Anything in *stars* means to repeat it until the end of the row.
5. After finishing this first sequence of rows (6, 1,1,1) add 4 maintenance rows
to the next sequence. The next sequence of rows would be 10 1 1 1 , then 14
1 1 1 and so on until you reach the desired length of your skirt.
6. We create the frills at every 4 rows of the skirt.

Each number corresponds to the number in the picture below.

My skirt + measurements as a reference before beginning: (you can also check the testers’
sizes and measurements for reference, found at the end of the pattern)

For size M:
I only did 15 rows for my skirt. I did the sequence of 6, 1, 1, 1, and then I began the
sequence again by doing 6, I liked the length so I fastened it off here.

Band 6 maint rows 6, 1, 1, 1 6, 1, 1, 1, 6

Length 78cm (across) 8.5cm 12.5cm 21cm

Length 12.5cm 16.5cm 25cm

including band

Number of rows 64 6 9 15
Part 1:
Sizing of the band:
Before beginning, measurements A and B must be taken to determine the length of the
Band.

Size chart:
Size A B Length of Yarn weight
Band

Size S 64 - 70cm 75cm - 86cm 70cm - 78cm dk

Size M 71cm - 77cm 82cm - 93cm 77cm - 85cm dk

Size L 78cm - 84cm 89cm - 100cm 84cm - 92cm dk

Size XL 85cm - 91cm 96cm - 107cm 91cm - 99cm dk

Crocheting the Band:

The band consists of repeating rows of the same number of stitches in each row. This band
will sit around our mid-waist and is the beginning of the skirt.
It may seem a bit loose on your body, but can be adjusted later when we add the tie to cinch
it to fit your waist

We are using a 4mm hook

Ch2 after each row, then to. ch2 does not count as a dc.
I did 9 x 1dc so that my band was 4cm wide. You may do more or less stitches if you have a
different yarn weight, so that your band is 4cm wide.

Row 1: Ch11, starting in the third chain from the hook, do 9 x 1dc (or do 1dc in each chain)
Row 2: ch2, 9 x 1dc, to
Continue making rows of 9 x 1dc, until you have the required length of your band.
I crocheted 64 rows so that my band was the required length. (Mine was 78cm)

When your band is the required length, ch2, sandwich together both ends of the band and sc
them together. Do this by inserting your hook through the corresponding stitches and placing
1sc in each stitch.
You have finished the band! If you are using two different colours, fasten off, attach your
second colour (mine is green) in the same stitch and ch3.
If you’re only using one colour, do not fasten off, ch3.
Maintenance Rows and Increase Rows

I call a maintenance row one in which you place 1dc in each stitch for the entire row.
I call an increase row one in which you place *1 x 1dc, 1 x 2dc* and repeat this for
the entire row. If something is in *stars*, this means repeat until the end of the row.
(It’s basically an increase in every other stitch)
With this skirt, we do 6 maintenance rows, 1 increase row, 1 maintenance row, 1
increase row for the first set. After finishing this first sequence of rows (6, 1,1,1) add
4 maintenance rows to the next set. The next set would be 10, 1, 1, 1 , then 14, 1, 1
1 and so on until you reach the desired length of your skirt.

. ( *6,1,1,1*)
My skirt had *6, 1,1,1, 6 for a total of 15 rows of the entire skirt, so I only added 6
maint rows to the second sequence.

Ch3 at the beginning of every row. Ch3 does not count as a hdc/dc. At the end of
every row, sl st to the first stitch of the row. Do not turn your work.

Colour 2: before beginning Maint and Inc rows

After attaching yarn of colour 2 (mine is green), multiply the number of rows of the Band by
1.5. This is around the number of hdc you should have on top of your band. Place half
double crochet stitches on top of the band, as shown in photo 1. You will be placing around
3 x 1hdc per every 2 double crochet rows of the band. It does not have to be exact.
For 64 rows I had 99 x 1hdc.

After the end of the first row, (and after sl st to the first stitch), ch1, cut and fasten off

Switch to 7mm hook

Attach the yarn of Colour 1 (mine is white) and ch3.

Row 2: (maintenance row) Place 1dc in each stitch until the end of the row. For my size M,
this is 99 stitches. (As the hook is bigger, place the dc in the gap between every hdc stitch,
as this is easier.)

At the end of each row, sl st to the first dc of the row and ch 3.

Continue placing 1dc in each stitch for the next 5 rows, so you have 6 maintenance rows in
total. (The length of my 6 maintenance rows is 8.5cm)
Then, do 1 increase row, 1 maintenance row, 1 increase row.
After finishing this first sequence of rows (6, 1,1,1) add 4 maintenance rows to the next set.
The next set would be 10 1 1 1 , then 14 1 1 1 and so on until you reach the desired length
of your skirt.

When you finish the body of the skirt, attach the yarn of the second colour.
Ch1, and place 2sc in each stitch for the entire row, then sl st to the first stitch and fasten off.
Part 2:
Frills

1: Insert your hook into the ch3 at the beginning of the 4th row as shown in photo 1. Make a
slip knot, ch3 and begin working surface dc stitches into the ch spaces in each stitch of the
4th row. To make a surface dc, insert your hook into a ch space and come out through the
next ch space, and work a dc. At the end of the row, sl st to the first stitch as seen in photo 6.
Row 2: ch3, place 2dc in each stitch until the end of the row, then sl st to the first st.
Fasten off.
With a 4mm hook
Row 3: Attach 2nd colour, ch1, and work 2sc in each stitch until the end of the row,
then sl st to the first st. Fasten off.

To add the second frill, repeat this process.

Insert your hook into the ch3 at the beginning of the 8th row, or the row in which you’d
prefer your next frill to be. In my skirt, I created frills at every 4 rows.
Waist tie
Create a chain of approximately 200 chains, cut and fasten off.
1. Insert your hook through the centre of one row of the band.
2. Yarn over the chain
3. Pull your hook through
4. Continue to place your hook through the centre of every other row of the waistband (or
every two rows, however you'd like) and pulling the chain through. Do this for the entire
length of the band and you are able to tie both ends of the chain together to form a bow. The
waist tie allows you to adjust the skirt.
