SCENIC
OVERLOAD
It never ceases to amaze us how much
amazing scenery New Zealand packs into
its North and South Islands. While the high
country stations of the South Island are
best known for adventure riding, the North
Island is no slouch either when it comes to
eye-popping vistas and terrain to remember
for a lifetime. Like these lush green clifftops
north of Gisborne, which were part of the
recent Yamaha New Zealand Adventure Rally
that was hosted by legend Kiwi MX hero
Ben Townley. What a view!

So I finally scored a replacement switch

two fuel tanks, but for this job only the
right-side tank needed to come off. Bonus!

THE WHEEL DEAL

However, getting the right-side tank off
involved removing the SW-Motech crash bar

wouldn’t have made a difference. What I do
know is I’ve owned an air vest for a couple
of years — and barely use it. I get the safety
benefits, but it’s another layer. It’s heavy and
hot, especially in summer. And the charging?
Don’t get me started.
There have been improvements lately, but
I’m still not seeing widespread uptake of
them. There’s maybe one or two riders in a
group of 40, but the ones who are wearing
an air-vest swear by them. But for most of
us, the jury’s still out.

Day two started out fresh — cool enough
to stop within an hour to warm hands
on exhausts — and passed by the iconic
Woods Point servo, a real throwback in
time. The ancient hand-cranked fuel bowser
and cool Golden Fleece and Mobil signage

returned to Mansfield via the Howqua Hills,
where the 4WD descent Special section
turned out to be steep but straightforward.
In the dry anyway — would certainly be a
different story in the wet.
Day three was our chance to visit one of
the High Country’s more famous landmarks:
Craig’s Hut. Starting off towards Mount
Buller from Mansfield, we peeled off onto
Mount Stirling Road and climbed up the
flowing gravel road. The short road in
towards the hut sees plenty of 4WD action,
which means whoops — and fun — for the
Ténéré riders. We were rewarded with good
visibility, which is not always the case at the
hut, which is not as old as it seems, having
been ‘rebuilt’ in the 1980s as a film set for

But there are plenty of ‘real’ huts in the

ROCK YOUR WORLD

Day three ended with a run on the scenic
but rocky Jeep Track and on into Dinner
Plain to look forward to another loop ride
on day four.
This gave us the option to tackle the
famed Blue Rag Track — a rock-infested
climb up to Blue Rag trig point that, like
day one’s climb, requires momentum and
commitment. And a clear run, with hopefully
no 4WDs on the trail.
The RideADV crew led all riders part way
along the spectacular razorback route,
and from there the final ascent was purely
optional. The difficulty of Blue Rag varies
depending on 4WD activity and any grading
that periodically happens. The conditions
on a challenging scale of one to 10 was

Later that day, many rallygoers opted for a
cool loop that crossed several farms before
dropping into Omeo for fuel. The servo
hires out a range of Fantic e-bikes and we
enjoyed a good yarn with the locals about
the recently opened MTB trails in the area
that had us itching to return to sample the
Flomeo MTB park.
The last section of day four followed
Dinner Plain Track back into the resort. In
the dry this is a fun, twisting trail with some
short climbs, a few bog holes, ruts and
typical High Country rocks, some sneakily
hidden in the grass. But in the wet this trail
gets super-challenging. On our ride the rain
started to come down halfway along, making
progress slow and slippery. Concentration
levels were high and bench racing yarns were
many at the High Plains Hotel that evening.

plan another adventure ride!” Indeed we
do. Mitch Martinez and his Baja buddy Pete
Schmidtmann were telling stories of their last
big adventure ride to the Arctic Circle back
in 2023 and decided then and there it was
time to do it again. But where to? Since this
discussion took place at Mitch’s casita in San
Felipe, Baja, the answer to the question was
a natural: “Let’s ride to the southern tip of
Baja and back!”
Thus the plan was hatched. Easy!

Mitch and Pete then began spreading the
word. They gathered several veterans of their

other riding buddies and family members,

As many AAB readers will remember, Rod was one of the
