Summary Narrative
Almost everyone who can read and write has a social media account. We use it to share our day-
to-day lives and connect with anyone you wish to, no matter where they are. But social media
has become a monitoring tool for advertisers, the government and intelligent agencies. Social
media surveillance refers to the collection and processing of personal data pulled from digital
communication platforms, often through automated technology that allows for real-time
aggregation, organization, and analysis of large amounts of metadata and content. Advances in
artificial intelligence (AI) have opened up new possibilities for automated mass surveillance. In
fact, these AI can identify patterns through a person’s activity on social media, certain
behaviours that are not apparent physically. These data collected from individuals are being sold
to certain buyers such as governments, intelligent agencies or advertisers. Surveillance by
governments have different outcomes. In some, there is repression in freedom. The US police
use surveillance to identify terrorists. Some countries use it to track anti-government activists
and arrest them. The advancement in IT, most significantly in AI, has made data surveillance
easy on the internet. But this is a threat to the greater public in general.
What lesson have you learned?
The lesson here is that social media surveillance has become increasingly prevalent in our daily
lives, and it poses a significant threat to our privacy and freedom. While social media platforms
provide us with convenient ways to connect with others and share our lives, we must also
recognize that our personal data is being collected and processed by various entities for their own
purposes. This includes governments, intelligent agencies, and advertisers who can use this data
to identify patterns and behaviours, track individuals, and potentially limit our freedom.
Therefore, it is important for individuals to be aware of the risks associated with social media use
and take measures to protect their privacy online. It is also important for policymakers and
regulatory bodies to implement laws and regulations that balance the need for security with
individual rights and freedoms.
What suggestions can you offer?
● The implementation of such programs must adhere to strict standards of transparency,
which must include an ongoing dialogue between law enforcement and the communities
that are being affected.
● The surveillance will be apply only at the department store, street and malls, which can
monitor the people who come and go.
● Make the surveillance unnoticed.
● Be attentive to your surroundings.
● Improve the artificial intelligence into respective and have privacy.
