Safety Operation
• Bring CM ASB2 into operation following the instructions in 2 ”Setting
CM ASB2 into Operation”.
• CM ASB2 must only be used together with current-limitted test sets like CMC
or CMS25x.
• Before connecting and disconnecting test objects, verify that all outputs have
been turned off and are in de-energized state. Never connect or disconnect
a test object while the outputs are voltage- or current-carrying ("ON").
• When disconnecting cables, always start on the side feeding the power.
• Do not operate CM ASB2 under wet or moist conditions (condensation).
• Do not operate CM ASB2 when explosive gas or vapors are present.
• The SELV interface (Safety Extra Low Voltage) of CM ASB2 (’ext. Interface’)
should only have external devices connected that meet the requirements for
SELV based on EN 61010-1 or IEC 61010-1.
• If CM ASB2 is opened by a user, all guarantees and warranties are
invalidated.
7
CM ASB2
1 Designated Use
CM ASB2 enables easier testing of relays with higher current or power
requirements.
The relay can be connected in a standard three-phase manner to CM ASB2,
which is connected to single phase outputs of CMC or CMS 25x. Any 1- or
2-phase faults can be switched with CM ASB2.
Main applications:
• Testing the I>> element (with e.g. 50 A) of an overcurrent relay per phase by
paralleling the outputs of the CMC 256.
• Switching up to 4 current outputs of the CMC 256 in series to gain four times
higher compliance voltage in the current path (e.g. for testing distance,
electromechanical relays).
• Using a CMS 25x (1 x I, 1 x U) without re-wiring while changing the fault type
cases. Testing in 6 fault type cases can be done automatically.

Setting CM ASB2 into Operation
2 Setting CM ASB2 into Operation
2.1 Wiring for Definite Time Relay
Figure 2-1:
Wiring for definite time
relay
ext. Interface
The example above shows the wiring for testing the I>> or I>>> stages of a
definite time relay. In this case all outputs of a CMC256-6 have been connected
in parallel. This way a maximum single-phase current of 75 A can be obtained.
For information on how long the current can be obtained refer to chapter
5.2 ”Voltage Input and Output”.
The user has to ensure sufficient conductor cross sections of the wiring to the
CM ASB2 and to the test object. In order to avoid thermal damage inside the
CM ASB2, the current input of the CM ASB2 possesses an overtemperature
protection.
9
CM ASB2
2.2 Wiring for Distance Protection Relay
Figure 2-2:
Wiring for distance
protection relay
ext. Interface
In the figure above, 4 outputs of a CMC256-6 have been connected in series.
This way a maximum single-phase current of 12.5 A can be obtained at
quadruple driving voltage (approx. 40 Vrms / 60 Vpk).
In the hardware configuration of the CMC 256-6 the single-phase fault model
with V Fault and I Fault has to be selected (refer to figure 2-3).
Figure 2-3:
Setting the single-phase
fault model in the TU 2.x
hardware configuration
If an additional amplifier of the type CMS25x is used as a source, wiring has to
be performed accordingly following the same principle.

2.3 Functional Overview and Operation
The following table shows the assignment of fault type cases and input signals.

1. The inputs are insulated from the outputs.
Two basic modes of operation are distinguished: "Auto" and "Manual".
In "Auto" mode control is performed by the connected CMC. From software
version Test Universe 2.0 on, automatic control of the CM ASB2 according to
the selected fault type is performed by the following test modules:
• Overcurrent
• (Adv.) Distance
• VI-Starting
• Autoreclosure
Precondition: The binary outputs Bin. out 5 - 8 are routed in the hardware
configuration of the Test Universe test software (refer to figure 2-4).

Figure 2-4:
Setting the TU 2.x
hardware configuration:
Routing of the binary
outputs Bin. out 5 - 8
(ASB 5-ASB 8)
For other test modules, such as State Sequencer, the user has to set the binary
transistor outputs Bin. out 5 - 8 according to the output pattern shown in table 2-
1 prior to the fault inception (for a length of 100 ms).
This way, the relay switches during an intermediate no-load condition.
More detailed information about modules that do not support automatic
switching can be found in the Test Universe software description.
In "Manual" mode the fault type cases can be selected sequentially using the
arrow buttons on the front panel of CM ASB2.
