INTRODUCTION
Sanitation is one of the most important determinants of public health, particularly in schools
where children are already at risk of falling ill because of inadequate hygiene practices, and poor
environmental sanitation in and around the school. School sanitation is broad in scope as it
involves hygiene and sanitation procedures practiced in school. This involves the keeping of
clean and operational sanitation facilities, the provision of hand washing facilities with soap and
clean water, the existence of suitable waste disposal and collection bins, the routine cleanup of
school facilities, among others. These foundational aspects are crucial in preventing the
transmission of infectious diseases, fostering a hygienic environment, and promoting the overall
health and well-being of students.
Background of the Study
Poor sanitation and maintenance of school restrooms can significantly impact students' health
and well-being. Students frequently using unsanitary facilities are at increased risk of contracting
various diseases and infections, leading to absenteeism and decreased academic achievement.
The uncomfortable and potentially hazardous conditions in poorly maintained restrooms
contribute to stress and negatively affect students' [Link] also includes accessibility for
students with disabilities, prioritizing privacy and safety, and fostering respect for every member
of the school community. This research will look into how restroom conditions impact students
and why proper sanitation is important for creating a healthy and positive school environment.
Poor hygiene and sanitation in schools significantly contribute to illness among students,
negatively affecting their health, academic performance, and overall well-being. Schools lacking
adequate sanitation facilities, consistent access to clean water, and proper handwashing protocols
see increased cases of communicable diseases, including diarrhea, respiratory illnesses, and
parasitic infections (Sangalang et al., 2020). These health issues not only lead to physical
discomfort and illness but also result in increased absenteeism, hindering students' educational
success and development.
Research also shows that this issue extends beyond individual student experiences, affecting the
entire school community. Schools lacking improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH)
services have significantly higher absenteeism rates, while schools that implement proper
sanitation interventions reduce absences by up to 54% (Frontiers in Education, 2022). A study in
the Philippines revealed that improving toilet cleanliness and maintenance increased facility
usability and promoted a healthier school environment (Chard et al., 2022). Therefore, this study
focuses on understanding the connection between restroom sanitation and students' health,
attendance, and overall school experience.
