Activity #_____
Periodic Table of Elements
“Arranging the Elements in the Modern Periodic Table”
I.Objective:
1.To write and arranged chronologically the elements in the modern periodic
table based of the following:
a.by period
b.by group or family
c. correct atomic number
d.Color metals,nonmetals and metalloids
II.Materials:
Colored pen blank periodic table Ball pen
III.Procedure:
1.Arrange by Period (Horizontal Rows):
✓ Begin with Hydrogen (atomic number 1) in the top left corner.
✓ Continue filling in the elements from left to right, increasing by atomic
number, until the row (period) is complete.
✓ Move down to the next row (period) and repeat the process.
2.Arrange by Group or Family (Vertical Columns):
✓ Observe the vertical columns called groups/families.
✓ Place elements that have similar properties (e.g., Alkali metals, Halogens,
Noble gases) in the same group.
✓ Make sure each group aligns vertically with elements having the same
number of valence electrons.
3.Check by Correct Atomic Number:
✓ Ensure that each element is arranged in increasing order of atomic
number (Z).
✓ Double-check that there are no missing or misplaced atomic numbers in
your table.
✓ Color Coding of Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids:
4.Use three different colors to classify elements:
✓ Metals – Color with [blue, or any chosen color]
✓ Nonmetals – Color with [green]
✓ Metalloids – Color with [yellow]
Guide Questions:
1. What is the difference between arranging the elements by period and by
group/family?
_________________________________________________________________________________
2.Why is it important to arrange the elements by increasing atomic number instead of
atomic mass (as in Mendeleev’s table)?
____________________________________________________________________________________
3.What similarities do you notice among elements within the same group/family?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
4.How do the properties of elements change as you move across a period (left to
right)?
____________________________________________________________________________________
5.How do the properties change as you move down a group (top to bottom)?
____________________________________________________________________________________
6.After coloring, what general area of the periodic table contains most of the metals?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
7.Where are the nonmetals mostly located?
_____________________________________________________________________________________
8.Which elements are considered metalloids, and why are they classified as such?
