Use Patterns
Another Look! and Mental Math
to Divide
A school spends $12,000 on 20 new computers.
Each computer costs the same amount.
How much does each computer cost?
Find a basic fact, and then use patterns.
A basic fact that can be used for 12,000 ÷ 20 is
12 ÷ 2 = 6. Use place-value
120 ÷ 20 = 6 patterns to help find
1,200 ÷ 20 = 60 the quotient.
12,000 ÷ 20 = 600
Multiply to check: 600 × 20 = 12,000
Each computer costs $600.

Leveled Practice In 1–16, use mental math to help solve.

1. 720 ÷ 90 = 72 tens ÷ 9 tens = ______ 2. 4,800 ÷ 60 = 480 tens ÷ 6 tens = ______

3. 1,200 ÷ 30 = ___ tens ÷ ___ tens = ___ 4. 25,000 ÷ 50 = ___ tens ÷ ___ tens = ___

5. 320 ÷ 40 6. 9,000 ÷ 30 7. 1,800 ÷ 90

8. 2,000 ÷ 40 9. 24,000 ÷ 80 10. 32,000 ÷ 40

11. 3,600 ÷ 90 12. 40,000 ÷ 50 13. 42,000 ÷ 60

14. 5,400 ÷ 60 15. 49,000 ÷ 70 16. 56,000 ÷ 80
