3.5 Setup

The setup of the navigation system with all components is shown in

Figure 1. A special interface connects RADARpilot720° with the radar device. Additionally, the
differential GPS receiver or a GPS compass is connected over the serial interface of the system. An
AIS transponder transmits static respective voyage related data as well as warning messages to a
land based AIS receiver or other vessels. An LTE router can be used to establish a data connection to
the internet, and, therefore, provide connection to a water level server or to remote maintenance.
Furthermore, attachments or rate-of-turn indicator, rudder and echo sounder are possible

Figure 1: Setup of RADARpilot720°

RADARpilot720° calculates the heading of the vessel by comparing the radar image with the chart. In
order to keep the orientation of the electronic chart correct, even when the radar is switched off, a
GPS compass can be connected to the system. Alternatively, a second GPS receiver can be connected.
The distance between both GPS antennae has to be at least 50 meters to enable a highly exact
positioning in the chart.
It is necessary to use GPS receiver with differential GPS. Furthermore, the telegram has to be as
accurate as 4 decimal for the minutes of the position data. It is feasible to use a GPS receiver that
transmits the correction data via medium wave (so called IALA Beacons) as well as via EGNOS. Devices
capable to do so are for example Furuno GP-37 or JRC DGPS 212 W. by default, these receivers use
medium wave correction data, and in case of a failure in transmission of medium wave data, they use
EGNOS correction data. A list with reference stations, sending correction data via medium wave, and

1. On the backside of the computer, approximately 10cm space should be available for cable and
connection plugs. The front of the computer should be easily accessible, to attach USB sticks for
example. Furthermore, the on/off switch is also loacted on the front.
2. Since the computer does not need active cooling, fresh air should have access to the radiator.
3. The computer has to be fixed, so that grounding of the box is provided.
4. It is not allowed to install the computer close to a heating device or in the hot air stream produced
by a heater.
5. You should protect the computer from dust and dampness
6. Regard the length of the cable connecting trackball and connecting radar. The trackball has to be
placed on a suited surface. The cable connecting should not be longer than 5m.

5.2 Setting up the screen

The screen should be placed in a central spot of the steer house to provide optimal sight to all
information. It should be close enough to the steersman and dazzle should be avoided. Since,
normally, space is rare in a steer house; the screen can be fixed with a support arm above the control
position. The company Ergotron, for example, sells suited support arms ([Link]).
Please take into account that the user should have access to the buttons on the front of the screen in
order to regulate brightness. Above and below the screen fresh air should be circulating for cooling.
Screens from Nirolo also offer the possibility to operate via an external button. The video signals
provided by the computer vary depending on the model which is installed. Please check the
differences in the following table:

Monitors of some radar devices, especially the older ones, sometimes have no or a very small
synchronization range in which they can automatically adjust to the analog video signal. In order to
be able to display a high-quality image on these monitors as well, the RADARpilot720° includes a
special functionality for selecting and activating the corresponding settings. The window shown in
Figure 10 appears.

To accept the settings, click on the button »Apply« at the bottom of the screen.
The new parameters will then be set on the graphics card. A confirmation dialog as shown in Figure
11 will appear again.

Figure 11: Confirm the settings for greaphic card

If the monitor settings are not suited for any reason, it may happen that the monitor can not
synchronize with the signal and no image is visible. In this case, simply wait for about 15 seconds. If
the dialog in Figure 11 has not been confirmed with »Yes« during this time, the graphics card of the
RADARpilot720° will be reset to its previous state and an image will be visible again.
In the next step, the image size and image position can be set in the configuration window (Figure
10). For this purpose, the corresponding values can be changed using the sliders. The left sliding bar
influences the image position, the right bar changes the image size. Please note that the terms
Vertical and Height refer to a monitor in landscape format. If you operate the monitor in portrait
format, the meanings are reversed accordingly.
Click the close »Close« button to exit the configuration window.

5.3.2 Image orientation and format for DVI connection

If the RADARpilot720° shall be operated with a monitor connected to the the DVI port, it is necessary
to deactivate the VGA connection. A special plug is available for this purpose. Figure 12 shows the
assignment. The monitor cable is plugged into the DVI socket, the dummy plug on the VGA port.

Figure 12: Plug for the connection of DVI monitor

If the adaptor is not connected, an additional VGA monitor is incorrectly detected by the system. Then,
the DVI monitor would show only the blue standard background of the operating system without any
further control elements. Furthermore, it will be no longer possible to operate the system using the
trackball; the system can only be shut down by briefly pressing the power button.
Figure 13 shows the screen configuration window for a monitor on the DVI port. Similar to a monitor
on the VGA port, the display can be rotated by clicking on the purple arrow. It does not make sense to
set the screen resolution, as the system and monitor will do this automatically when a DVI port is
connected.

5.3.3 Configuration of several monitors

The computer with RADARpilot720° has several outputs to connect a monitor. If several monitors are
connected, the system automatically recognizes the connected monitors. The window for configuring

the monitors then indicates that several monitors are connected. Figure 14 shows an example of such
a configuration.

Figure 14: Work station with two monitors connected

In this example, one monitor is connected to the system at the VGA port and one monitor is
xconnected at the DVI port. In the left configuration window you can freely move the screens. The new
configuration is adopted as soon as you click »Apply« at the bottom of the window.
In the example shown, the two monitors are arranged next to each other resulting in a seamless
desktop, where you can switch directly from one monitor to the other using the mouse. The primary
screen is marked with a yellow star. The software RADARpilot720° can fill only one monitor. Therefore
the second monitor appears here with the blue standard background of the operating system.
It is possible to display the same image on both monitors. To do this, proceed as follows:
Set the correct orientation and resolution for each monitor. The prerequisite for the double display is
that both monitors are operated with the same resolution. Then slide the second monitor symbol on
top of the other in the screen configuration window as shown in Figure 15.

As soon as both monitor symbols overlap completely, confirm the setting with »Apply«. Now the same
image is displayed on both monitors.

5.4 Setting up the trackball

The trackball is the main operation device for RADARpilot720°. It should be easily accessible for the
right hand of the steersman. Please take into account that the whole hand has to be laid on the
trackball to assure exact handling. The trackball needs a small area to be placed on, possibly above
devices that are used seldom. Wireless trackballs are not allowed.
It is possible to connect several track balls can also be connected to the system at the same time.
They are then active concurrently. With this setup its is possible to use the system at to steerhouses,
as long as the monitor signal is splitted and transmitted to two monitors.

5.5 Power supply

It is recommended to connect the computer to the 24 v power supply on board. Therefore, the plug of
the power supply delivered has to be removed. If this is not possible, it is recommended, that a
separate power supply of 230V, 50Hz AC is used for RADARpilot720°. Furthermore, we recommend
that this power supply is reserved for the navigation system, independent of other devices, e.g. via
an alternating current converter of the ship battery. Thereby, a failure-free operation of
RADARpilot720° is possible, even in case of breakdown of the normal 230 V power supply.
When using alternating-current converter, please note that grounding has to be provided to
protect the navigation system from damage.

5.6 Start/Exit RADAR pilot720°

Figure 2 shows the front and the back side of the most recent generation of navigation computer. On
the front side, right, there is a blue button to switch the system on and off. According to the
configuration of RADARpilot720°, the system starts as soon as power is supplied. The button in the
lower right corner glows in blue. By pushing that button, the system RADARpilot720° can be switched
off. As soon as you shut down the system, the button glows red. Eventually, the LINK1/ACT1-LED at
the front of the system is also illuminated (as it is true for RADARserver). This light is on, when a
network cable is connected.
At the back site, there is a clamp which can be used to connect an external key. This parallel key can
be used to switch on and off the system. The external key should be attached to the control panel in
the wheelhouse to easily turn off and on the system RADARpilot720°.
Earlier versions of the navigation system do not have this possibility. In order to avoid damage on the
file system or the hard disk, the system has to be shut down via the user interface on the screen (menu
item »Off«), before turning off the power supply. The most recent generation of computer shuts down
by itself when switched off with the external key.

Software Version 4.6

Nevertheless, it is recommended to shut down the system always in the user menu on the start
screen first.

5.7 Connection of the radar

The RADARinterface card within the computer provides the electrical separation of computer and
radar scanner. There are four signals to be transmitted: video, trigger, sync (azimuth, ACP) and
heading (ARP). Video and trigger have to be transmitted via coax cable. For the connection radar –
computer, you have to use a cable of the type RGB CY 3xKx 0.4/1.6 + 3 x 0.25 from “Lapp Kabel”. This
cable has coax lines for video and trigger, and, furthermore, the lines for heading, sync and earth of
the radar. The cable provides excellent shielding. The outer shield can be connected with the metal
plug top the box of the computer. The shielding of the inner cables has to be connected to the ground
connection of their RADARinterface card. The outer shielding should not be connected to the radar
ground connection.
The RADARinterface card is attached with a 15-pin sub-D-plug. Both radar interface cards used in
RADARpilot720° systems have the same connector and identical pin assignment in the connector. For
better shielding a metal he plug box should be used. The pin assignment is given as follows:
1 - heading (ARP) color: white
2 – video signal color: red (KOAX)
3 – radar ground color: braun
4 - trigger color: blue (KOAX)
5 - sync ( ACP, Azimuth) color: green
9 – radar ground for the shield of the video signal color: red (KOAX), shield
12- radar ground for the shield of the trigger signal color: blue (KOAX), shield
Please allow for correct strain relief of the radar cable with the 15-pin Sub-D-plug.

5.8 Assembly of the splitter amplifier

The integration of the splitter amplifier is only necessary, when older types of radar scanner are in
use. More recent models from Radio Holland and Alphatron already have a slave device interface, ex
factory. For the current Swiss models, the manufacturer offers a retrofittable slave device interface,
which must also be fitted.
If the interface for a slave device is not available, the signals »video«, »trigger«, »azimuthal
synchronisation« and »heading« have to be decoupled and amplified for the system RADARpilot720°.
The integration of the splitter amplifier depends on the type of radar scanner and is described in the
according manual of the device. Please regard the following general safety advices:
1. Interrupt and lock the power supply of the radar device before starting the assembly.
2. Avoid accidental contact with the ground of the radar device; this might cause damage to your
radar.

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

3. Install all cables thoroughly and with strain-relief.

4. Make sure that the splitter card is well fixed in the radar body.

5.9 Laying the radar cable

Please, care for a protected, strain-relieved and straight installation of the connection cable
to the radar, especially, when the radar antenna is fixed to a swivelling holder.
Attach the end of the radar cable to socket of the RADARinterface card, and fix it with the two screws.

5.10 Serial interfaces

The computer has four internal serial interfaces that can be used immediately. If more than four
interfaces are necessary, an USB2Serial Adapter is available to connect RS232C devices (ATEN UC-
232A).
Each USB port of your system carries identification (A, B ... Z). The configuration options within the
program RADARpilot720° resemble these identifications (USB-A, USB-B, …, USB-Z). If you configure
an USB interface for a specific device, but the interface does not have an adapter, the port will be
indicated as N/A (not available). During configuration of RADARpilot720°, you can still delete the
configuration of that port, but not configure other devices to that port.
Already existing USB2Serial adapter are recognized and adjusted by the system when starting. On
the start screen, newly attached or recently removed adapter are indicated by a message. When you
remove an adapter during operation of RADARpilot720°, a message appears as soon as you return to
the start screen.
If you want to remove temporarily a device connected via USB2Serial adapter, you have to remove the
9-pin RS232C connector from the adapter, but not the USB plug from the device. Removing the USB
plug deactivates completely the interface. Therefore, reconnecting is not possible anymore during
operation. The system has to be rebooted.
USB-RS232 adapters allow adjusting the interfaces of RADARpilot720° to the specific needs for serial
interfaces. Many sensory devices with NMEA output can be connected easily to RADARpilot720° via
RS232 adapter.
Please note, that galvanic isolation is not given without additional converter and no data can
be transmitted to the sensor!
Besides the USB RS232 adapter of the type ATEN-UC232A, there are also USB-RS232/422/485
adapter of the type ICP7561 that can be used. These adapters provide galvanic isolation of sensor and
navigation computer, and they are used, especially, for the connection of the converter modules
necessary for the detection of analogue and digital signals (see chapter 7.1). Up to now, the AIS
transponder is the only external device transmitting data to and from RADARpilot720° (static/voyage
related data of the own vessel, safety related messages). All other sensors with NMEA output (GPS,
GPS compass, echo sounder, anemometer, rate-of-turn indicator…) only send data to
RADARpilot720°.

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

For failure-free operation, it is important to check the electrical conditions on board, and eventually,
to take care of the galvanic isolation of the devices connected to RADARpilot720°.

5.10.1 Connecting an GPS receiver

RADARpilot720° runs with any commercially available, NMEA compatible GPS receiver.
You have to connect the NMEA output of the receiver with one of the serial ports. The standard transfer
rate of the interface is 4800 Bit/s; it can be adapted with the software. Please note, that the device
has to be configured in the software of the system. How to proceed is described in the chapter about
software configuration (chapter 8).
Pay attention that the antenna of the GPS receiver is not shaded by construction parts, because the
performance might be affected considerably.
In the following, some instructions for configuration of special GPS receiver are given which are not
included in the manual of the GPS receiver.
Furuno GP-37: To achieve a correct output of the GPVTG string, you have to choose in the field
»MISW/RECHTW:« the setting to „RECHTW“ in the plotter menu (main menu – plotter)
(respective in the Dutch menu »PEILINGREF:« to „WAAR“). In the menu to set up GPS, the
damping time constant has to be set to a value correlating to the dynamics of the vessel. In
case of doubt, the damping time constant should be set to zero.
JRC DGPS 212 W: The installation manual of the GPS antenna describes how you switch the hardware
of the antenna from NMEA 1.5 to NMEA 2.1. The delivered antenna is set by default to NMEA
1.5. You have to switch it to NMEA 2.1, before operating. The instructions for this are
described in the installation manual of the GPS receiver.

5.10.2 Connection of AIS

If an AIS transponder shall run with RADARpilot720° or RADARpilot720°smart, the interface has to be
set as shown in Figure 16. For the exchange of AIS data a serial port of RADARpilot720° has to be
connected with a Port (e.g. ECDIS port) of the AIS transponder. Bidirectional communication should
be possible; otherwise many AIS related functions of RADARpilot720° are not available. The
bidirectional connection is realised with a RS422 interface, as it is provided by the ICP7561 converter
module. The connection to the port of the AIS transponder has to be done with two pairs of wires,
while in each case TX has to be connected with RX. The AIS transponder mainly transmits AIS signals
of other vessels (their static data). On the other hand, RADARpilot720° transmits the own static and
voyage related data to the AIS transponder.
Because RADARpilot720° compares the chart and the radar image, the information about the heading
of the vessel is available in the system. Normally, this information is not available on inland vessels.
RADARpilot720° is able to emulate a compass based on its NMEA-Out function and the heading
information.
In order to present correct display of the ship symbol or outline to other vessels, the AIS transponder
needs information about the orientation of the vessel. Therefore, it is feasible that RADARpilot720°
transmits the orientation via NMEA-Out function over the sensor port of the AIS transponder. This is

shown in the lower part of Figure 16. The configuration of the NMEA-Out function is described in
chapter 8.4.2. Please note, that no position information is allowed to be transmitted to the
transponder, if at the same time the position detected by AIS is used within RADARpilot720° (see
chapter 8.4.2)

6 ADJUSTMENT OF RADAR SIGNALS

The RADARpilot720° software version 4.5 can be started two different radar interface cards. The two
cards are identical with respect to the input side but differ in their structure and in the bus at the
computer on which they are operated. The card is used in older versions is designed for the PCI bus.
It comprises an 8 bit A/D converter as well as a signal processor for preparing the radar signals. The
new card is made for the PCI-E bus. It has a 14 bit A/D converter and a programmable FPGA for signal
processing. In the following the configuration of both cards is described separately.
The RADARinterface cards are adjusted via software. It is mainly self-regulating. Calibration of the
binary signals trigger, sync and heading is not required. The polarity of the signals is configured
automatically when the user selects the according type of radar scanner in the software configuration.
It can be checked in the configuration menu, category »Radar« (see Maintenance manual of
RADARpilot720°).
Video gain has to be adjusted manually.

6.1 Configuration of the PCI-RADARinterface card

The adjustment of the RADARinterface card should be done after finishing the configuration by
software. As soon as computer and the radar are switches on, the peak of the signals trigger, sync
(ACP) and heading (ARP) is detected automatically. The function of these signals is indicated by the
illuminating diodes on the back side.

video gain

Trigger
Sync (ACP)
Heading (ARP)

Figure 17: Slot bracket of the RADARinterface card with 2 diodes for each signal

Two illuminating diodes (red and green) belong to each signal, trigger, sync (ACP) and heading (ARP).
An alteration of a signal causes a switch from red to green and vice versa. The appearance is mainly
influenced from the switching frequency. The diodes for heading change their colour following the
rotation of the radar scanner (approximately every 2 seconds). The diodes for sync and trigger change
the colour more often; therefore, both diodes are illuminating. If a signal is missing, only one of the
diodes is illumining.
Only the gain of the video signal has to be adjusted in the RADARinterface card. The maximal range
of the A/D converter is +/- 512 mV. The user can adjust the video signal within this range by screwing

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

the set-screw at the back side. It is recommended to conduct first the configuration via software after
switching on radar. Screwing the set-screw clockwise increases signal gain, screwing the set-screw
anticlockwise decreases video gain, thus, at the end, the radar image on the screen of
RADARpilot720° has the same intensity as the radar image on the radar screen.

6.2 PCI-E RADARinterface Card

After the PC and radar have been switched on, the automatic peak detection starts for the signals
Trigger, Sync (ACP) and heading (ARP). The function of the signals is indicated on the LEDs on the rear
side of the panel.

trigger
ACP
ARP

Figure 18: Slot bracket of the PCI-E RADARinterface card with LEDs on the back

Two LEDs of the same colour are assigned to each of the signals Trigger, Sync (ACP) and Heading
(ARP). A signal switch of the input signals causes the switching from red to green or vice versa. The
optical impression is determined by the switching frequency of the signals. The LEDs for heading
normally change colour with the radar rotation time (approximately every two seconds). The sync and
trigger signals change much faster, so that both LEDs usually light up. If one signal fails, only one of
the two LEDs lights up.
For the calibration of this card the external program INviewer is used (/Ref1./), which can be started
from the external maintenance interface.

6.2.1 Hardware configuration with INviewer

Open the system settings ( ) from the start screen of RADARpilot720° and select the program "IN
Radar" from the configuration section "in-Innovative Navigation". A window opens (Figure 19), in
which you can start the program for radar settings by pressing the "Start INviewer" button.

Here it is possible to set the parameters related to the analog RADARinterface card - Express (PCI-E).
The »Hardware Sync Divisor« reduces the rate of the azimuthal clocking. The»Trigger Divisor«
activates a reduction of the trigger pulses by omitting every second pulse. This is useful when a high
sampling rate is required, but no very high azimuthal resolution is required. The fubnction »Invert...«
change the polarity of the respective signal. The »Low trigger threshold« activates a special hardware
feature to better measure triggers with low voltage. The»Noise level« cuts off all received data in the
radar video signal below this threshold.

can be adjusted to improve the radar image. The signal is spread by this fine adjustment and thus a
higher resolution is reached.
An inversion of the video can be achieved by selecting a smaller value for »Video High« than for »Video
Low«.
The »OK« button saves the configuration in the system. The »Load« button allows a standard
configuration to be loaded from a file (Figure 23). Click »Save« to save the configuration to a file.

in the radar image (radial offset). This calibration task can be performed by opening the calibration
window (menu »Radar – Calibration«, Figure 21).
In addition to setting the heading offset and the radial offset, this dialog allows you to define a static
sensitivity characteristic. This characteristic is defined by an interpolation curve consisting of a
maximum of 10 interpolation points. Each of the points describes a threshold (a gray value between
0 and 255) and a distance (meters). Outside the given interpolation points, the characteristic curve is
interpolated linearly. It is possible to load (»Load«) or save (»Save«) all calibration values. A browser
window opens with the selection of predefined standard configurations (Figure 25).

Confirm your entries by pressing »Ok« and close the window.

6.2.3 Histogram window

To check whether all filters are calibrated correctly, a histogram with the gray values of the current
radar image can be displayed by selecting theRadar - Histogram Window . This histogram shows the
gray values in percent in a bar graph. With the settings » Video low« and »Video high« (Figure 22) the
radar signal can be optimized for the PCI-E-RADARinterface card and the settings can be checked with
the radar histogram. The settings should be such that the gray values are distributed relatively evenly
and not shifted in one direction. A shift of the distribution indicates an overload of the signal.

7 CONFIGURATION OF THE ADAM MODULES

7.1 Analogue data

Figure 29: Configuration of the ICP/ADAM modules

ICP or ADAM modules are used to detect the analogue data within RADARpilot720°. These modules
are connected with each other over a serial bus according to RS 485 standard. Using a seial converter
module. this bus can be connected to a USB interface or a serial RS232 interface of a computer. Figure
29 shows the setup of such a network. The computer, in that case a notebook, is connected via USB
cable with the converter module . A serial bus leads to the actual measurement modules. The software
RADARpilot720° allows configuring 4 modules maximal. Each module needs a voltage of 12 – 32V.
Suited measurement modules are modules of the type ADAM 4017, ADAM 4012 or I7017 F. These
modules show the following features:

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

Each module galvanically separates the input from the serial communication line. In order to avoid
interferences between different devices installed, each device should be connected over its own
module.
The module I7017 F detects the tune-indicator signals of the radar, because this module allows a
higher sampling rate than a module of the type ADAM 4017. In that case, the network has to provide
rate of transmission of 115000 Bit/s. If no tune indicator signal is detected, a rate of transmission of
9600 bit/s is sufficient. This is also the default setting for rate of transmission of the modules.
Please note the low input resistance of the module type ADAM 4012, if no supply voltage is
there!
There are support tools for download available in the internet for the configuration of the modules.
The URL [Link] provides software for ICP/ADAM modules. However, this software does
not recognize modules of the type IPC 7017 F. For this type of module the URL [Link]
provides software (utility DCON setup) to download. Both tools are realized as Windows software.
Therefore, it is feasible to download them to a maintenance notebook.
For configuration and starting the network, please proceed as follows:
1. You have to connect the serial ICP CONi7561 with the computer and connect the first module to the
serial side. The modules are preset by default to the address 1. The rate of transmission is 9600
bit/s by default.
2. Use the search function within the configuration software and select the module indicated with the
address 1. Assign a new address to that module. Figure 29 shows that. address numbers starting
from 5 upwards are used.
3. For modules of the type 4017 or 7017 F, you have to deactivate all inputs which are not in use.
Activated inputs that are unnecessary reduce the sampling rate (especially for module 4017).
4. Adjust the converting rate to the network rate (only possible with Advantech software tools).
5. Then connect the second module and repeat the steps described above. Attention: assign a
different address to each module!
If the transmission rate of the network shall be 9600 bit/s, the configuration is finished now. If the
transmission rate of the network shall be 115000 bit/s, you have to set the transmission rate for each
module separately. Please note, that a bridge has to be between the junction init+ GND on the serial
side for configuration of the transmission rate of the interface. If the RS232 interface of the navigation
computer is used for connection, the converter module of the type RS232-RS422/485 ICP 7520 can be
used.

7.2 Digital data

The status of the blue board, for example, is transmitted to RADARpilot720° as digital data.
In the software RADARpilot720°, ADAM and ICP modules also provide the detection of this digital
information. The following types of modules are used:

8 CONFIGURATION OF THE SOFTWARE

Since the hardware was installed corrected, the software has to be configured accordingly. The
configuration concerns:
1. Entering the vessel outline and positions of the antennae
2. Configuration of the connected devices
3. Fine tuning of the radar signal
4. In case, calibration of the rudder and rate-of-turn indicator on the display

8.1 Activating the service mode

In order to switch to service mode, the system has to be switched on and started first (via the button
»Start« on the start screen (see RADARpilot720°, V 3.7, User Manual). You have to open the complete
menu with the right arrow in the bar at the bottom of the screen. In the main menu »Navigation« you
find the menu for operation mode (Figure 30), where you can switch to service mode.

Figure 30: Submenu for operation mode

The functions for configuration the software are hidden normally. Only service people should have
access. Therefore, you have to enter a »Password« in the according field of the open menu »Operation
mode« shown in Figure 30. The password to be entered is “Inni” (please take care of capitalisation of

Before you change any configuration, please check whether the time is set. How to set the time is
described in the maintenance manual for RADARpilot720°, version 3.7.

Please note, you can use the ALT-TAB key combination to switch between several open
windows if they are on top of each other on the desktop and are hidden.

8.2 Configuration of the radar interface

radar to be configured is selected in the upper left corner of the window.
Next, the appropriate radar type can be set with the selection button. The program has to be closed
and restarted.
When using a PCI-E RADAR interface card, the values for »Video Low« and »Video high« can also be
entered with the mouse (see section 6.2.1). The values can be adjusted to improve the radar picture.
The signal is spread by this fine adjustment and thus a higher resolution is reached. An inversion of
the video when using a PCI-E RIF can be achieved by selecting a smaller value for »Video high« than
for »Video Low« This option is not available in the PCI-RIF window.

Figure 32: Configuration of radar

When opening the menu for radar configuration, the function »show raw (unfiltered) radar« always is
enabled. This setting is necessary to adjust the RADARinterface card via histogram. When you disable
that function, the radar image while navigationg appears.
The slider control below »Expert Characteristic« are shaded in grey until »Expert Characteristic« is
activated. Normally the characteristic curve that can be adjusted here, is loaded from the radar
presettings. In some cases this curve has to be set. The curve determines the distance dependent
radar suppression (STC). Please, use the »Default Characteristic« and contact in-innovtive navigation
GmbH, if you may need to use the expert mode. We will provide the according instructions.
The radar should be switched on. Please select a value for gain at the radar device, so that the radar
echo is clearly visible, but not over modulated. The calibration of the radar is conducted with three
settings: »radial offset« and »heading offset« of the configuration (Fehler! Verweisquelle konnte nicht
gefunden werden.), as well as potentiometer of video gain on the RADARinterface card (see chapter
6.1,Figure 17). The values forBase Gray and Saturation are preset by the selection of the radar type.
These settings should be changed only in exceptional case (see chapter 8.2.1). To see a sharper

contour of the radar echo, the value for»Gain: saturation« can be reduced. The value for »Gain: base
grey« should not be increased above 10, otherwise there is a danger that weak echoes will not be
visible at all.
Presumably, a clear radar echo is visible on the screen of RADARpilot720°. If not, you have first to
adjust the gain as described in step 3.

1. Adjustment (attracting or rejecting land area)

Changing the value for „radial offset“ determines, whether in the display the radar image attracts or
rejects land area. This setting is now done roughly, and has to be repeated later more carefully. For
the rough setting, you have to compare the indicated distance of a marked target with the radar. If
GPS is available, pay attention to the match between radar image and chart display.

2. Setting heading offset

Changing the value for „heading offset“ regulates the distortion of the radar image. Please adjust this
value very thoroughly.

3. Setting video gain

The level display of the RADAR interface card is done via the external program INviewer, which is
already described in 6.2.1 to 6.2.4.
Radar histograms are shown as examples in Figure 33. To the right is the strength of the radar echoes
processed in the RADARpilot720° software. The percentage of echoes of a certain strength in the
entire image is plotted upwards. According to the previous explanations, the radar should be set so
that clear echoes are visible on the radar screen. Therefore, the histogram must also contain a clear
proportion of echoes with a high signal strength, i.e. the right bars in the histogram must have a clear
length. If the image has a maximum in the middle as shown in Figure 33 on the right, please increase
the video gain on the PCI-RADAR interface card with the potentiometer so that a histogram similar to
Figure 33 on the left results. With a PCI-E-RIF, this setting is made via the INviewer software (histogram
window, chapter 6.2.1).

Figure 33: Histogram to set the optimal video gain

If the histogram shows a huge proportion of echoes of high intensities, you have to decrease the gain.
Please check at the same time, that radar image shown by RADARpilot720° equals the radar image of

the antenna. The analysis of the signal with this histogram makes sure, that the A-D-conversion of
the RADARinterface card is set optimally.

8.2.1 Adjustment of radars not yet present in the selection

If you use a radar scanner, that is not yet available in the selection of the configuration window(Figure
32), you have to conduct the following steps for adjusting the radar signal:
1) Select a similar radar type (where required contact in-innovative navigation GmbH for the
preset suited)
2) Activate »Show histogram« and set »Saturation Greylevel« to 100%
3) Switch on the radar and choose a value for gain, so that the radar echo is clearly visible on
the radar screen, but not overmodulated.
4) Adjust the signal gain with the screw on the backside of the RADARinterface card:
a) Screw anticlockwise (attenuates the signal) until the histogram has its maximum at
„medium“
b) Screw slowly clockwise until the histogram has its maximum at „bright“
5) With the settings „Base grey“ and „Saturation“, the display of the radar intensities can be
influenced. The system can distinguish 256 different radar intensities. Intensity values below
the „Base grey“ are suppressed. All values above this threshold value are indicated on the
display with the according colour (light green for high intensity, dark green for low intensity).
A video signal input of less than +-120mV has the effect, that the gain of the RADARinterface
card does not reach the full spectrum of intensities. If that is the case, you have to lower the
values for „Saturation“ below 100%. This regulation causes the weak signal to be displayed
in light green. All signals above the value for „Saturation“ are displayed with maximal colour
intensity. Then, you have to adjust the „Saturation Greylevel“ until the radar image of
RADARpilot720° has the same intensity like the radar image of the radar device. Please step
gently with this setting.
6) You have to increase „Base Grey“, in case the radar echoes are surrounded by large areas of
low signal intensities (means dark green areas).
Sometimes, it is necessary to operate with further configuration tools, e.g. if radars with unknown
electrical features are used. There is a software module, INviewer, which is used for maintenance
purposes. This software tool is able to analyse the signal gain of a radar beam. This information is
necessary for the adjustment of the characteristic curve in Expert mode (»Expert Characteristic«).

8.3 Configuration of the PCI-E-RADARinterface card

The PCI-E-RADAR interface card is supported from software version 4.5 of the RADRpilot720°.
The configuration of this card is done via the additional program INviewer, which is accessible via the
external service menu (see /Ref1./).It is described in section 6.2.

8.4 Configuration of the serial interface

The following serial input devices can be configured:

• GPS
• AIS
• echo sounder
• anemometer
• rate-of-turn indicator
• steering device
• temperature
• network for analogue input
• network for digital input
• compass
Please take care that you have connected all modules for USB interface conversion, before you start
configuration of the serial interface. Furthermore, the system has to reboot before you can configure
the serial interface.
Clicking the field »Serial« (Figure 31) opens up a new window for configuration the serial interfaces.
Figure 34 shows an example. Each line refers to a serial interface of the computer. On the left side,
the current setting of each interface is given (rate and parity setting), and the device configured for
this interface.

Figure 34: Configuration of serial interfaces

The setting and assignment of each interface can be adjusted with the button »Configuration«.
Thereby, at the lower end of the window is extended as shown in Figure 35 for the interface “C:”.

Software Version 4.6

The upper part contains the possibility to change the baud rate and the parity of the interface. The
lower part gives a selection of the devices that can be assigned to the interface: GPS, AIS, echo
sounder, anemometer, rate-of-turn indicator (ROT), rudder, compass, analogue and digital. It is
possible to configure more than one device to on serial interface (e.g. ROT and rudder), if the
connected device transmits NMEA strings for both sensors, or if the NMEA strings are combined via
NMEA multiplexer to one line. Senseless combinations (e.g. modem and analogue on the same
interface) are not possible. In that case, all devices incompatible appear grey. When a device is
already assigned to an interface, it can be deleted at any time by clicking again on the according
button of the device.
The configuration becomes active as soon as the entry is visible behind the colon. After rebooting the
system RADARpilot720°, the settings are operant.
You can check the assignment of the serial interfaces in the external program IN
Schnittstellenbetrachter at any time »Interfaces« (see chapter 9.1).
Besides the devices listed above, a GSM modem can be connected to RADARpilot720°. The modem
needs its own interface and is configured via maintenance menu. If an interface is assigned to a
modem, it is indicated in the overview.

8.4.1 Configuration of GPS interface

Figure 36: Configuration of GPS interface

Clicking the button for »GPS« opens the window shown in Figure 36. RADARpilot720° is able to
process data of up to five GPS receivers at the same time. The measurements are weighted against
each other according to their accuracy and offset. Receivers with a distance of several meters are also
used for the calculation of the pre-alignment.
In the window shown in Figure 36, it is not possible to select GPS1. The reason is that GPS1 has already
been configured for another interface. Between all other GPS receivers you can select which one is
assigned for the interface. In the example shown, a second GPS should be configured. Now further
control elements appear in the lower part of the dialog window, which can be used to make further
sensor-specific settings (Figure 37).

Software Version 4.6

Figure 37: Configuration of a GPS receiver

With the button »process position + velocity«, you activate the processing of position and velocity
information for eachh single GPS receiver.
Please note: when position and velocity processing of NONE of the GPS receivers is activated,
the system may have functional problems!
For full functionality of RADARpilot720° it is necessary that the GPS receiver provides the strings
GPGGA and GPVTG. These have to be activated. If the string GPRMC is used, position accuracy is
limited.
The activation of the function »Differential GPS available« defines whether it is provided that this GPS
receiver sends a DGPS position. When this function is activated, and the receiver does not provide
the DGPS position due to an interruption of the reception, a warning appears on the graphical user
interface of RADARpilot720° saying „no DGPS“.
Besides the commercially available GPS sensors for navigation, there is also GPS receiver used for
measurement purposes. You can connect those sensors, too. The system supports receiver of LEICA
or TRIMBLE receiver providing GPGGK position messages.
Furthermore, you can connect a GPS compass and GPS heading sensor. Those sensors have several
antennae and they are able to provide not only the position information, but also heading information
(e.g. Furuno SC30). If such a GPS receiver type is connected, the activation of the function »process
angle« allows the processing of heading information by the navigation system. The alignment of
reference direction of the GPS compass relative to the ships axis can be adjusted by the according
»Headingoffset«.
For processing of height information (»process altitude«) a special license is necessary.
All settings done within this menu became active after reboot of RADARpilot720°.
Please note: For correct functionality, you have to enter the position of the receiver on board together
with the vessel outline within the program RADARpilot720°. How to do so is described in chapter
8.5.3.
If you want to remove the assignment of an interface to a GPS receiver, you have to click the button
»no GPS« in the upper part of the window (Figure 37), and to confirm this selection by clicking »Ok«.

8.4.2 Configuration of the AIS receiver

Figure 38: Configuration of the interface for AIS receiver

The configuration of the AIS transponder involves three menus. The menu »Serial« serves for the
configuration of the serial interface used for communication between navigation system and
transponder.
AIS specific data as MMSI or vessel class have to be determined in another menu that is described in
chapter 8.6. The reference position on the vessel is determined in the menu for geometry (see chapter
8.5).
If a licence for AIS is available within RADARpilot720°, the AIS interface can be configured. As
described before for GPS, the button »AIS« (Figure 35) has to be clicked, and the AIS receiver has to
be assigned to the serial interface.
Configuration of settings concerning AIS should be done first. Settings described in chapter 8.5.4and
8.6 shall be done as soon as the program has rebooted (select »Exit« and start again).
You have to select the transponder type from the list given above (»Standard (Class A)«, »Nauticast«,
»Saab R4«, »Kongsberg AIS200«). Configuration of the following is done by the system automatically
according to the transponder type selected. Furthermore, a second list provides the definition
whether the device is a pure receiver or a base station or a standard transponder: (»Class A
transponder (sends rep. #1,2,3)«, »Class B transponder (sends rep. #18, #19)«, »base station (sends
rep. #4)«, »search-and-rescue aircraft (sends rep. #9)«, »Aids-to-navigation (sends rep. #21)«,
»receiver only (does not send anything)«).
Some of the transponders available also transmit inland specific data according to the Inland AIS
Standard. If the transponder selected does not transmit such data by default, the function »inland
extensions available« can be activated, and the navigation system processes these data,
nevertheless. The button below provides a selection for the type of data: you can select between
sending no Inland AIS, and sending Inland AIS data according to different standards. (»transponder
without inland AIS«, »transponder supports inland AIS prerelease«, »transponder supports inland
AIS V1.0«).

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

Furthermore, according to the current settings, it is shown whether differential GPS data are available,
and whether transmission of Inland specific data is supported.
AIS transponders do have their own GPS receiver integrated. Therefore, transponders are capable of
position and velocity determination. When you want these data to be used to determine the position
of the vessel you have to activate the function »process position + velocity« (Figure 38).
Furthermore, you can choose, whether the transponder sends data about the number of persons on
board (»Transponder handles persons-on-board message«).

8.4.3 Configuration of the gyro compass

You can connect RADARpilot720° with a gyro compass as input device. The following sentences are
processed:
$--HOT,x.x,T*hh<GR><LF>
This port is not suited for the connection of a GPS compass. A GPS compass should be configured as
additional GPS receiver (chapter 8.4.1).
Figure 39 shows the window for configuration of the gyro compass.

Figure 39: Configuration of the interface of gyro

For installation, it has to be clarified first, whether the signal of the compass already provides the
compensation of the error caused by the own movement. If no compensation is integrated in the
signal, the compensation has to be done by RADARpilot720°. Therefore, you have to activate the
function »apply compensation«.
During installation of the compass, it might be that heading is not aligned exactly with the axis of the
vessel. To correct this deviation, »Headingoffset« can be set (Figure 39). Please change this setting
only, if no alignment is possible at the gyro itself.

8.4.4 Configuration of the rate -of-turn indicator (serial interface)

Figure 40: Configuration of the interface for rate-of-turn indicator

© 2020 in - innovative navigation GmbH Seite 47 von 72

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

For configuration the interface of the rate-of-turn indicator (»ROT«, Figure 31) in the service menu
»Serial«, the window shown in Figure 40 opens up. Here, you can set the value range of the rate-of-
turn indicator. If the vessels turns faster than the maximum value given here, the value is not
processed (e.g. for the conning display).
The following strings are transmitted:
$--ROT,x.x,A*hh<CR><LF>
Especially small vessels can reach a maximal rate-of-turn of 300°/min. In order to achieve a correct
update of the orientation of the chart during a speedy manoeuvre, a suited maximum value should be
set in the menu. The maximum value set in the window shown here is also valid for rate-of-turn
indicator connected via analogue/digital converter (chapter 8.4.7)
After finishing the configuration, you have to confirm the settings by clicking »Ok«.

8.4.5 Configuration NMEA-Out

In contrast to all other configuration menus for serial interfaces, the NMEA-Out is an output of
RADARpilot720°, not an input port. RADARpilot720° generates a variety of internal data, provided via
NMEA strings. You can configure, which data shall be transmitted in which time intervals. Figure 41
shows the according window.

Figure 41: Configuration of NMEA-Out

It is possible to export the position, heading and rate-of-turn measured.

If an AIS transponder is connected, as it is described in chapter 5.10.2, heading and rate-of-turn can
be transmitted to it.
RADARpilot720° fuses the measurements of different sensors to determine position and heading, for
example the system fuses the data of two GPS antennae. In case data of one of the sensors are
missing, the system extrapolates on the basis of a model. Therefore, the position information
provided by RADARpilot720° is more accurate than the position information of one sensor alone.
For surveying and mapping purposes, it may be useful to export the internal position provided by the
system RADARpilot720° to a measuring device.

The following strings are provided by the system:

The window shown in Figure 35 shows how to configure the system for other serial NMEA devices, as
there are echo sounder, anemometer (WindMeter) and rudder. In each case, a window exemplarily
shown in Figure 42 opens up. No other sensor specific settings are necessary for theses devices. The
activation of the device has to be confirmed by clicking »Ok«.

8.4.7 Configuration of analogue input

The configuration of analogue inputs is done with the according button shown in Figure 35. If selected,
the window shown in Figure 43 is visible.
You can adjust different parameters for the analogue modules. First, you can select the type of
analogue interface by clicking the upper left button with the left mouse button. Currently, the type

The zero position of the rate-of-turn indicator can be set in the field »Offset« when the vessel is at
anchor (see Figure 43), while the rate of turn indicator is switched on.
A first adjustment is possible with the test button of the rate-of-turn indicator. A change of
»ScalingFactor« has to be calibrated with the indication at the rate-of-turn. RADARpilot720°
processes internally the rate of turn in rad/s. Therefore, a norm signal of rate of turn (20 mV/(°/min))
results in a scaling factor of 0,0145.
For the rudder display of the type „Sigma 100“, the »Offset« has to be set to 0.03 (next to the button
»Rudderangle«), furthermore, the »ScalingFactor« has to be set to the value 0.9.
We recommend testing the calibration setting during a test trip, when the radar is switched on. You
have to make a continuous turn of the ship for at least 30 seconds. This can be conducted in a port
basin or in a long curve of the river. When starting to turn, you have to click »calibrate« (see Figure
44) in the menu for setting the analogue input. The display of the rudder is replaced by a simulated
rate-of-turn indication, and it is reconstructed based on the comparison of chart and radar image. The
display is calibrated after approximately 20 seconds.
Take care that the value measured is identical with the simulated value during the rest of the turn. To
do so the value »Scaling Factor« has to be adapted. A change of »Scaling Factor« immediately
influences the rate-of-turn indicated. Please take care that the vessel turns uniformly continuously,
and take care that radar and chart image are matching.

The calibration can be conducted with a simulation (replay) of a trip with this ship that stored in the
system. You have to enter the scaling factor you found out with the simulation under operation mode.

Figure 45: Setting of digital inputs

You have to configure the digital input via the button »Digital input (on/off)« shown in Figure 35. After
selecting this menu, the window shown in Figure 45is visible.
Digital signals are received over the ICP/ADAM modules. The transmission rate and the interface have
to be configured.
It is possible to connect the interface with more than one module for the detection of digital signals.
Up to four modules are supported by the system. You can select the module on the button »module«.
In the line below, you can activate, whether the module is »available«, as well as to enter its
identification (»module ID«). It is important that modules which are not in use are not activated as
»available« (e.g. »module #4«).Further you have to enter the value -1 as module-ID.
You can define the module as »input« or »output«.
When »positive logic« is activated for an input, a high voltage level corresponds to the „ON signal“,
a logic 1. Otherwise, a voltage level close to zero corresponds to a “logic 1”.

8.5 Entering the geometry of the vessel

The configuration window (Figure 46) becomes visible if you click on the icon of the ship outline as
shown in the vessel geometry is defined in a specific window. This window opens up, when you click

8.5.1 Entering the vessel outline

It is very important, that the symbol of the vessel on the screen resembles the real outline of the
vessel, because the vessel symbol is important not only for the display on the navigation display, but
also for suppression of tracking of false radar echoes. False echoes may arise as reflexions of the own
ship. In case the symbol defined does not resemble the real shape, it may happen, the echo of an

empty pushed lighter is recognized as foreign vessel in front. Moreover, RADARpilot720° uses the
shape of the vessel to calculate the dynamic characteristics of the vessel. A wrong outline may reduce
the accuracy of positioning of the vessel in the chart.
For common motor cargo vessels, the vessel symbol has to be entered only once during installation
of the system, since the outline does not change anymore.
You can adapt the outline of the vessel by drag and drop the orange handles with the left mouse
button. The buttons »↔« and »↕« limit mouse movements in horizontal respective vertical direction.
You can also enter the coordinates of a point manually. As soon as you select a corner point in the
graphical display of the ship, the current coordinates X and Y for this point are displayed below it and
can be set by turning the roller over the respective digit. The radar antenna has the coordinates
x=0.0/y=0.0. All corner points are related to this. The selected point is marked with a frame. This
allows you to enter the ship's outline to the nearest centimetre.
The position of the radar antenna is fix in the picture. On the right side of the screen, the length of the
vessel is indicated in meters, as well as the width of the vessel and the position of the aft body relative
to the antenna. Please check, whether you have entered the outline correctly! With the button
»Scale«, you can select the scale of the display if desired.
In order to define the contour of vessel types such as pushing units, more than five vertices are
necessary. The fold out menu in the lower part (Figure 46) contains several types of ships with more
handles. Furthermore, you can select whether the outline is tapered or not (Figure 47).

Figure 47: Fold out menu for vessel type and examples for predefined outlines

As soon as you have selected a vessel type, you can click the button »Load default outline« and adjust
it to your vessel outline. Please note: in the muster outline, the position of the radar is fix. You have
to build your vessel AROUND the radar position.
In order to prevent entering of the same configuration for reapplication, it is possible to save a specific
configuration to disk, and to reload it if required. It is reasonable to store the configuration on USB
stick or separate disk, even if it is not necessary to define more than one configuration for the same
vessel. This backup helps to reinstall the system quickly, if an error occurs and data got lost for any
reason. The User manual, chapter »General Service functions«, describes how you can safe and
reload a specific configuration.
Moreover, the user can define profiles with different outlines fort he same vessel (Vessel-Profile). The
procedure to do so is describes in the user Manual. When starting the system, RADARpilot720° offers

Figure 48: Defining the blanking area

Sometimes there are false radar echoes in the near field around the vessel, disturbing the tracking
function. The reason may be, for example, multiple reflexions in by multiple reflexion of the radar
beam within the hopper well when travelling empty. Therefore, you can suppress the detection of
objects and tracking function (Figure 48). You can adapt the shape of this blanking area by drag and
drop handles in the same way as for the ship symbol (chapter 8.5.1).

8.5.3 Entering the position of GPS antenna

Figure 50: Entering the position of the AIS transponder

The AIS function is used to exchange position and static data (load, destination etc.) between the
transport users. In order to transmit the own position correctly, the transponder has to be added to
the vessel configuration. The GPS receiver required can be integrated to the transponder or it can be
an external device connected.
Click the symbol for AIS in the configuration window (Figure 50), and enter the position by drag and
drop in the same way as for the GPS antenna (chapter 8.5.3).

8.6 Entering information to be transmitted by AIS

After starting the system, you can configure the AIS symbol shown in Figure 31. You have to enter the
data to be transmitted to other vessels with the keyboard within the window for vessel data (Figure
51). The first three fields contain the »name of vessel«, the »call sign« and the »IMO Number«.
In the field »ship class« you can select the adequate class with right click. The according field »sub
class« offers a selection of sub classes, from which you have to choose the correct option.
Further, you have to enter the vessel ID in the field »Inland« following the Inland AIS standard (Unique

With the button »Positioning device« you have to select the receiver used to determine the position
of the own vessel. This may be a GPS device or an integrated navigation system.
Furthermore, you can define the range of automatic detection of AIS signals. As soon as a vessel
enters that range, but does not send its data, the system actively starts a data query.

8.7 Matching radar and chart

The button »Match« (Figure 31) opens up a menu for the settings of display calibration. The automatic
calibration of the match of chart and radar via image processing is an important function of
RADARpilot720°. This function allows displaying the chart in the same orientation as the radar.
Match is activated by default, but if you use another sensor for orientation (gyro compass or GPS
compass), it makes sense to deactivate this function. Please consider, that (de)activation of this
function becomes operative not until next booting of the system.

Figure 52: Activation/deactivation of matching function

If no gyro compass or GPS compass is connected to the system, you must not deactivate that function.

10 TROUBLESHOOTING

This chapter provides hints to identify and eliminate errors that may occur and may restrain the
optimal functionality of the system. The errors that may occur are sorted to their appearance.
There are errors described that may occur during installation. Please refer to the according chapters
of the Maintenance Manual for errors that may occur when the system has run trouble free before.

10.1 You can not switch on the system

1. Check the power supply of the computer!

2. Is the blue led control light illuminated at the front of the PC? If yes, then the computer is running.
3. In that case check the cable to the monitor and the power supply of the monitor. Is the brightness
of the monitor optimal?

10.2 System does not boot correctly

1. Are keyboard and mouse connected correctly?

2. If the drive contains a CD ROM, please remove the CD!
3. Remove USB stick in case!
4. If nothing does not boot after all, please note the error message and contact in-innovative
navigation GmbH (phone: +49 (o)7154 807 150)

10.3 System does boot, but does not start

1. Is it possible to move the mouse cursor? If not, check the connection of the track ball, (upper PS/2
connection). Are the connections to keyboard and track ball inverted?
2. If you can not click anything on the screen, check the same.

10.4 System starts, but does not work properly

1. No radar image: Is the radar switched on? Is the connection of the radar correct? Set the gain to a
higher value (chapter 6)! Is the range set in the program RADARpilot720° set correctly? Does the
system recognize the signals? (check the illuminating diodes for trigger, heading and sync on the
PCI RADARinterface card, test the configuration in the service category »Radar«). Try different
settings for gain at the radar device!

Seite 66 von 72 © 2020 in - innovative navigation GmbH

Installations Manual
Software Version 4.6

2. The radar image is very light: calibrate the system as described in chapter 6. It may be that
calibration is necessary, e.g. if a radar is used which is not supported by the software (chapter
8.2.1). In that case, please contact in-innovative navigation GmbH (phone: +49 (0)7154 807 150).
3. No GPS: Check the status indication of the GPS receiver. Is the cable of the receiver connected
properly? Is the antenna free standing? If the GPS antenna works properly, then check the
connection to RADARpilot720° ! Is the transmission rate for the interface set correctly (default is
4800 Baud). Is the setting for parity Bit correct ( see Manual for the GPS receiver)? Does the
receiver send the correct NMEA strings ($GPGGA, $GPVTG, $GPRMC)?
4. Position determined by GPS is wrong: Is the date set correctly at the receiver (WGS84 is correct,
ED50 is wrong)? Does the antenna stand freely? As the case may be, try another location for the
GPS antenna.
5. No match: Is the position provided by GPS approximately correct? If not, this error has to be
eliminated first. Do you have a chart of this area? It might be that you have to switch to a chart set
of “inofficial” charts. Is the contour of the river border visible? In case, try another location.

The sections 6.2 and 9.2 contain further information on how to use the external program INviewer to
optimize the radar image.

11 GENERAL CARE INSTRUCTIONS

RADARpilot720° is suited for the use in the wheelhouse of an inland ship. It is constructed to be robust
against vibrations and variation in temperature. Nevertheless, you should take into account several
hints:
1. Do not bring moisture, oil or lubricants into contact with the track ball, monitor, keyboard or the
compact PC, because it may lead to severe damage of the system and it causes the danger of an
electric shock!
2. Please avoid contaminating the track ball or the keyboard with ashes from cigarettes, because it
reduces the wear lifespan of the devices remarkably!
3. Please read the care instructions for the track ball!
4. See, that the monitor and the PC are fixed well, thus, during continuous operation no resonances
can occur, which reduce the wear lifespan of the system and may even cause a total loss.
5. Do not install a fan heater close to the monitor or the compact PC! It may lead to overheating of the
system!
6. Prevent the system from getting dusty. If any assembly work has to be conducted in the
wheelhouse, switch off the system and disconnect the power supply. Protect all parts of the system
by covering them thoroughly with cloths!
7. If the track ball or another part of the system is defect for some reason, please replace these parts
only with parts identical in construction! Otherwise, proper functionality cannot be guaranteed.
Please contact your equipment supplier for the according information.
