Basic Concepts of Functions

For two variables x and y (where the ranges of values of x and y are known), if each value of x has
one (and only one) corresponding value of y, then
(a) y is a function of x, where x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable;
(b) the range of values of x is called the domain of the function;
(c) the range of values of y is called the co-domain of the function.

Values of Functions
We can substitute different values of x into a function f (x) to obtain the corresponding values of the
function.
e.g. If f (x) = 3x2 – 2,
(i) f (2) = 3(2)2 – 2 (ii) f(m – 1) = 3(m – 1)2 – 2 (iii) f(–2x) – 1 = [3(–2x)2 – 2] – 1
= 10 = 3m2 – 6m + 3 – 2 = 3(4x2) – 3
= 3m2 – 6m + 1 = 12x2 – 3

1. If f (x) = x2 + 2x + 3, find the values of the following.

(a) f (3) (b) f (‒1)
2
f (3) = ( ) + 2( )+ 3
=

(c) f (0) + f (2) (d) f (1) ‒ f (‒2)

2. If f (x) = 5x – 1 and g(x) = x2 + 3x – 4, find the values of the following.

(a) f (3) + g(–2) (b) f (4)  g(2)

3. If f (x) = x2 + x, find
(a) f (2a), (b) f (‒a).

4. Let h(x) = 5 – m – x + x2, where m is a constant. It is given that h(4) = 12.

(a) Find the value of m.

(b) Find h(b ‒ 1).
