AIR GAUGE
• The working principle of Air gauge is, when the air under constant
pressure discharges by passing through two openings. If one of the
hole is kept uniform, the flow and pressure will change according to
the size of the other.
• Operation of air gauge is based on common principle regarding the
conversions of distance variations into changing gauging air
characteristics such as air flow ,velocity and pressure.
• It is a type of comparator specifically a pneumatic comparator.
• They are basically classified in two types :
Air flow type ( Free flow air gauge).
Back pressure type
Simple Free Flow Air Gauge
Working of free flowing air gauge
• A compressor is used to provide a compressed pressure at a constant pressure
which passes through a flowmeter and eventually through nozzle.
• The air from the nozzle impinges on the surface placed in front of the nozzle.
• If the surface is moved toward or away from the nozzle the flow of air changes and
the float in the tube moves accordingly.
• Calibration can be carried out by applying known displacements to the surface.
PRESSURE AIR GUAGE
• It works on the principle of pressure difference generated by the air
flow. Air is supplied at constant pressure through the orifice and the
air escapes in the form of jets through a restricted space which exerts
a back pressure. The variation in the back pressure is then used to
find the dimensions of a component
• They give slow response in compare of flow/velocity type air gauge.
Simple Back Pressure Air Gauge
APPLICATIONS
• They are very much used for dimensional control of mechanical parts such
as bore size and bore shape faults can be detected that means straightness
of tubes for hydraulic cylinders.
• Taperness of a pipe can me measured as well as investigated.
• Used in dimensional control of gun barrels.
• Dimensional control of mechanical parts such as engine cylinder linings can
be checked
ADVANTAGES of AIR GAUGE
• The gauging member does not come in direct contact with part to be
measured and hence practically no wear take place on gauging
member.
• It has very small number of moving parts. Thus the accuracy is more
due to less friction and inertia.
• Measuring pressure is very small and jet of air helps in cleaning the
dust if any from the part to be measured.
• It is possible to have very high magnification up to 10000x.
• It is very suitable device for measuring diameters of holes.
• It is possibly the best method to detect ovality and taper.
DISADVANTAGES
• It require elaborate auxiliary equipments such as accurate pressure
regulator, air filters,and pressure gauges.
• They are very sensitive to temperature and humidity changes
• The accuracy may be influenced by the surface roughness of the component
being checked.
• The apparatus is not easily portable and is rather elaboratefor many
industrial purpose.
