Introduction To Computer Processors

This document provides an introduction to computer processors. It discusses basic concepts like cores, clock speed, and threads. It explains the difference between single-core and multi-core processors, with multi-core able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. Popular processor brands Intel and AMD are introduced, listing some of their latest desktop processors. The document concludes with expectations that future processors will be more energy efficient, have higher clock speeds and more cores, be smaller in size, cheaper, and more reliable.

INTRODUCTION

 In computing, a Processor or Central processing unit

(CPU) is a digital circuit which performs operations on
some external data source, usually memory or some
other data stream.
 Basically cpu provides the instructions and processing
power the computer needs to do its work. The more
powerful and updated your processor, the faster your
computer can complete its tasks.
BASIC CONCEPTS ABOUT
PROCESSOR

CORE
• A core is a hardware unit in the processor that executes
instructions sent to it.

Clock • The clock speed measures the number of cycles your CPU executes per
second, measured in GHz (gigahertz). If equipped with correct
speed hardware, clock speed an be increased(overclocking).

• A thread is a virtual version of a core and work as

THREAD real core. To create a thread, processors use hyper-

threading which is process of breaking physical
cores into virtual core(threads) .
WHAT IS SINGLE CORE AND MULTI
CORE PROCESSOR?

Single core : Multi core :

It has one core to perform It contains two or more
different operations. cores and can perform
multiple tasks at the same
time compared to single
core.
INTRODUCTION TO SOME POPULAR
BRANDS OF PROCESSORS

FUTURE EXPECTIONS FROM
PROCESSORS

 In upcoming years, processors will be more energy efficient.

 There clock speeds will be around 20 to 30 GHz or more and
they will have more number of cores with hyper threading.
 Their sizes will be smaller compared to now and Nano
processors will replace micro processor.
 They will be cheaper and reliable compared to now.
