WHAT IS POWER FACTOR ?

DISADVANTAGES OF LOW POWER

FACTOR.
METHODS OF IMPROVING POWER
FACTOR.
POWER FACTOR
*The cosine of angle between voltage
and current is known as power factor.

* Power factor is also defined as the

ratio of real power(active power) used
by a system to the apparent power
transmitted through the circuit.

*The “ideal” power factor is one (also referred to as “unity”).

*The power factor plays an
important role in AC circuits
since power consumed
depends upon this factor.

*From the above formula ,for

fixed power and voltage, the
load current is inversely
proportional to the power
factor.
DISADVANTAGES OF LOW POWER
FACTOR
*The load on the power system is varying;being high during morning and
evening and low at other times. During low load period, supply voltage is
increased which increases the magnetization [Link] results in the
decreased power factor.

*A power factor less than unity results following

disadvantages.
1)over loading of cables and transformers
2)Greater conductor size
3)large copper losses
4)poor voltage regulation
5)reduces the handling capacity of elements
METHODS OF IMPROVING POWER FACTOR.

*Power factor improvement can be

achieved by the following methods:
*There are 3 main ways to
improve power factor:

1) Capacitor Banks

2) Synchronous
Condenser

3) Phase Advancer

WHAT IS BATTERY BACKUP ?

TYPES OF UPS
+ves OF BATTERY BACKUP
BATTERY BACKUP
There are situations when electronic systems are having
loss of the primary power source and to solve this
problem a battery backup is designed so that it is the
part of the overall system’s functionality. This requires
the battery backup to power not only the system panels
but also all the peripheral equipment in use.

Battery backup avoids possible power spikes and even

damage to the equipment in our household or for the
businesses as well.

The most well-known option for a battery backup is an

uninterruptible power supply(UPS).
TYPES OF UPS

There are mainly three types of

UPS Systems :
[Link] UPS
[Link]-interactive UPS
[Link] double conversion UPS
STANDBY UPS
Also known as an
offline UPS and the
simplest type of
UPS.

The UPS System

monitors the input
voltage and
switches to battery
when it goes
outside a specific
range.
LINE-INTERACTIVE UPS

A line-interactive UPS will

monitor the incoming voltage
and either increase or decrease
the output voltage using some
form of voltage regulating
transformer.

Depending on how advanced

the line-interactive UPS is, it
could either output a simulated
sine wave (square wave) or an
actual sine wave output.
ONLINE DOUBLE CONVERSION UPS
A double conversion UPS takes
the incoming utility alternating
current (AC) power, converts it
to direct current (DC) power,
and then back to AC - hence
the term double conversion.

The UPS is continuously

performing this conversion
during normal operation. This
makes online double conversion
UPS systems as the most
reliable topology since they
protect the critical equipment
that they serve 24/7.
+VES OF BATTERY BACKUP
• No sound or moving parts as
compared to a generator.
• Environmentally friendly.
• Portable in size and takes up less
space at homes.
• Low maintenance cost.
• A affordable alternative to that of a
generator.
