DIVISION

The document explains the basic concepts of division, including the terms dividend, divisor, quotient, and remainder. It provides examples of division problems and demonstrates how to verify the results using the formula: Quotient × Divisor + Remainder = Dividend. Additionally, it includes practice problems for the reader to solve and verify.

In division, the number that we

divide is called the dividend

The number by which we divide is

called the divisor.
 The answer is the quotient.
 If there is a number left over, it is
called the remainder.
Example:
30  quotient
8 243  dividend

-24
divisor ——
03 
remainder
——
The four terms defined above are connected
in the following manners:
121 — quotient
x 2 —–– divisor
——
242
+ 1 ———— remainder
——
2 4 3————— dividend
——
Using this relationship, we can verify the
answer of a division sum.
 Quotient  Divisor + Remainder = Dividend

 Ex. dividend = 7595

 divisor = 5
 quoitent = 1519
 remainder = 0

 1519 x 5 + 0= 7595
 Work out each sum and verify the
solution:
7  quotient
7 51  dividend
-49
divisor ——
2  remainder
——
verification = quotient  divisor +
remainder = dividend
7  7 + 2
= 51
 Division of a 2- digit number by a 1-
digit Number
15  quotient
3 46  dividend
-3
divisor ——
16
- 15
——
1  remainder
——
Quotient x divisor + remainder =Dividend
 Division of a 4- digit number by a 1-
digit Number
1576  Quotient
2 2153  Dividend
-2
Divisor ——
11
-10
——
15
- 14
——
13
-12
——
1  Remainder
verification = quotient  divisor + remainder = dividend
1576  2 + 1 = 2153
Copy the sums . Work out
each sum and verify the
solution:
1. 5 42
2. 9 78
3. 6 645
4. 3 400
5. 5 1096
