Sequence
Definition of Terms
Sequence
A list of items/objects which have been arranged
in a sequential way. It is a set of elements that
follows a pattern, where order is important.
Term
Each number in a sequence.
Types of Sequence

term. The number of terms can be determined.
Infinite Sequence
A sequence without ending. The number of
terms cannot be determined. It has an ellipsis
symbol (…) which means unending.

What is an Arithmetic
Sequence?
Definition:
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence of
numbers in which the difference between any
two consecutive terms is constant.
Formula:
General form: a, a + d, a + 2d, a + 3d, …
a = first term
d = common difference
Common Difference (d)
How to find the common difference:
Subtract any term from the next term.
Example:
Sequence: 5, 8, 11, 14
d=8-5=3
Examples
Sequence: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10
a = 2, d = 2
Find the 6th term:
T₆ = 2 + (6 - 1)×2 = 2 + 10 = 12
Sequence: 10, 7, 4, 1
a = 10, d = -3
Find the 5th term:
T₅ = 10 + (5 - 1)×(-3) = 10 - 12 = -2

Arithmetic Means
The arithmetic mean, also called the
average or average value, is the quantity obtained
by summing two or more numbers or variables
and then dividing the sum by the number of
numbers or variables. The arithmetic mean is
important in statistics.
Arithmetic Means
Example:
1. What is the arithmetic mean between 10 and
24
10, ______ , 24
using the average formula
= = 17
Thus, 10, 17, 24
Arithmetic Means
Example:
2. Insert three arithmetic means between 8 and
16
8, _____, _____, _____, 16
a 1= 8 a5= 16
Find the common difference:
d= where n → last term
k → first term
Arithmetic Means
Example:
2. Insert three arithmetic means between 8 & 16
8, _____, _____, _____, 16
a 1= 8 a5= 16
Find the common difference:
d= = = =2 Thus, d = 2
Add the common difference to the first term:
8, 10, 12, 14, 16
Arithmetic Means
Example:
2. Insert three arithmetic means between 8 & 16
6, _____, _____, _____, 54
a 1= 6 a5= 54
Find the common difference:
d= = = = 12 Thus, d = 12
Add the common difference to the first term:
6, 18, 30, 42, 54

Arithmetic Series
A series is the indicated sum of the terms of
a sequence. The word “series” can be used both in
the singular and in the plural form.
