Cellular Respiration Overview Notes

Fatima took Cornell notes on cellular respiration. The notes covered the Krebs cycle, electron transport chain, aerobic and anaerobic processes, and fermentation. The Krebs cycle is the second phase of cellular respiration and converts pyruvate into carbon dioxide. The electron transport chain is the third stage and converts ADP to ATP using energy from the Krebs cycle. There are two types of processes - aerobic requires oxygen while anaerobic does not. Fermentation also was summarized, with alcoholic fermentation producing alcohol and lactic acid fermentation resulting in lactic acid.

Cornell Notes

Topic/Objective:

Name: Fatima
Class/Period: 5th period
Date: Week of: Nov. 30 - Dec. 3

Essential Question: Investigate the molecular pathway through which light energy is transferred to chemical
energy and dispersed throughout an ecosystem
Questions:
What is the Krebs
Cycle?

What is the
Electron Transport
Chain?

What are Anaerobic

and Aerobic
Processes?

What is
fermentation?

Notes:

2nd phase of Cellular Respiration

Aerobic (Needs Oxygen to happen)
1. Pyruvate enters Mitochondria
2. O2 breaks up pyruvate & forms NADH & CO2
3. Enzymes help create citric acid fuels cycle
4. More and More NADH & CO2 & 2 ATP are formed

3rd Stage of Cellular Respiration.

Aerobic (Needs Oxygen to Happen)
Converts ADP ATP
High energy electrons Produced from Krebs Cycle (NADH
& FADH2)
Happens in Mitochondrial Membrane
Creates 34 ATP

Anaerobic does not Require Oxygen

Example- Glycolysis
Converts Glucose into 2 pyruvate
Bi products are ATP & NADPH 2 ATP
Outside of Mitochondria
Aerobic Requires Oxygen to Happen
Examples- Krebs Cycle & ETC
Alcoholic
P.A. + NADH Alcohol + CO2 + NADP+
Glucose ATP + CO2 + Alcohol
Creates yeast beer, bread & wine
Lactic Acid

P.A. + NADH Lactic Acid + NAD+

Glucose ATP + Lactic Acid
What is NADH?
Bacteria & Muscle Cells
Yogurt Waste ( only blood )
Primary high energy electron carrier. Lots of NADH Lots of
ATP.

Summary: The Krebs cycle is the 2 process in Cellular Respiration. It is aerobic meaning it requires oxygen to
happen. The Electron Transport Chain is the final process in Cellular Respiration. Like the Krebs cycle, it is also an
aerobic process because it needs oxygen to proceed. There are 2 types of fermentation, lactic acid and alcoholic.

Alcoholic fermentation creates alcohol, yeast and bread. Lactic acid fermentation creates lactic acid for the muscle
and bacteria cells.
