Soil Classification Guide

This document classifies soils and soil aggregate mixtures based on their composition and characteristics. It divides soils into two general classifications - granular materials with 35% or less passing a No. 200 sieve, and silt-clay materials with more than 35% passing a No. 200 sieve. Within these, it further categorizes soils into group classifications A-1 through A-7 based on sieve analysis and characteristics of materials passing a No. 40 sieve, such as liquid limit and plasticity index. Each group classification is associated with usual constituent materials and a general rating for use as subgrade.
