INTRODUCTION
The following diagnostic steps will help prevent overlooking a simple problem. This is also where to
begin diagnosis for a no-start condition.
The first step in diagnosing any driveability problem is verifying the customer's complaint with a
test drive under the conditions the problem reportedly occurred.
Before entering self-diagnostics, perform a careful and complete visual inspection. Most engine
control problems result from mechanical breakdowns, poor electrical connections or damaged/
misrouted vacuum hoses. Before condemning computerized system, perform each test listed in this article.
NOTE: Perform all voltage tests with a Digital Volt-Ohmmeter (DVOM) with a
minimum 10-megohm input impedance, unless stated otherwise in test
procedure.
NOTE: Before disconnecting battery, obtain anti-theft code for radio. After battery is
reconnected, CODE will appear on radio display. Enter appropriate code.
Any time radio power is lost, pre-selected radio stations will have to be set.
For more information, see owner's manual.
Visually inspect all electrical wiring for chafed, stretched, cut or pinched wiring. Ensure electrical
Connectors fit tightly and are not corroded. Ensure vacuum hoses are properly routed and not pinched or cut
See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article to verify routing and connections. Inspect air induction system
for possible vacuum leaks.
MECHANICAL INSPECTION
Compression
Check engine mechanical condition with a compression gauge, vacuum gauge, or an engine
analyzer. See engine analyzer manufacturer's manual for specific instructions.
WARNING: DO NOT use ignition switch during compression test. Use a remote
starter to crank engine. Fuel injectors on many models are triggered by ignition
switch during cranking mode, which can create a fire hazard, contaminate
the engine's oiling system or cause damage to catalytic converter.
Check compression pressure with engine at normal operating temperature, all spark plugs removed,
throttle valves wide open and at specified cranking speed. Crank engine at least 6 revolutions to
determine engine compression. See ENGINE COMPRESSION table.
ENGINE COMPRESSION
Exhaust system can be checked using a vacuum or pressure gauge. Remove front (primary) heated oxygen
sensor (HO2S). Connect to 0-5 psi pressure gauge, and run engine at 2500 RPM. If exhaust system
backpressure exceeds 2 psi (12 kPa), exhaust system or catalytic converter is plugged.
If using a vacuum gauge, connect vacuum gauge hose to intake manifold vacuum port and start engine.
Observe vacuum gauge. Open throttle part way and hold steady. If vacuum slowly drops after stabilizing,
check exhaust system for restrictions.
FUEL SYSTEM
WARNING: Always relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related
component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components.
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove fuel filler cap. Using a wrench on the fuel pulsation damper,
cover damper and wrench with a shop towel. Loosen fuel pulsation damper one full turn. Replace copper
washers on fuel pulsation damper before re-tightening.
Remove negative battery terminal. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Place a shop towel around fuel filter. Using
one wrench to hold filter and another to loosen banjo bolt at top of fuel filter one turn. Replace copper
washers on fuel filter before re-tightening.
Prelude
Remove negative battery terminal. Remove fuel tank filler cap. Place clean shop rag over fuel pulsation
damper. Slowly loosen banjo bolt at fuel rail one full turn. Replace copper washers on sealing nut before re-
tightening.

FUEL PRESSURE
NOTE: If vehicle starts and runs, fuel pump main relay is okay.
Basic Diagnosis
Begin basic diagnosis of fuel system by determining fuel system pressure. If fuel pump fails to run,
inspect power supply to PGM-FI main relay. If all power supplies are present (ie, battery, ignition
and starter switch during cranking), perform functional test of main relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS and
SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING articles.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE
RELEASE. Remove the fuel pulsation damper. Connect Fuel Pressure Gauge (07406-0040001)
and Fuel Pressure Gauge Adapter (07VAJ-0040100). Reconnect negative battery terminal.
Disconnect vacuum hose from fuel pressure regulator and pinch line closed. Start engine
and allow it to idle. If engine starts, go to step 3. If engine will not start, go to next step.
2. Remove fuel fill cap. Have an assistant turn ignition on. Listen for fuel pump operation at fuel fill
tube. Fuel pump should run for 2 seconds. If fuel pump operates appropriately, go to next step.
If fuel pump does not operate appropriately, check fuel pump. See FUEL SYSTEM in
SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
3. Read fuel pressure. With engine idling, reconnect vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator. Read
fuel pressure. Both gauge readings should be within specification. See REGULATED
FUEL PRESSURE table. If both gauge readings are as specified, go to If
step
both
5).gauge readings
are not as specified, go to next step.
4. Disconnect vacuum hose from pressure regulator again. Pressure should rise when hose is
disconnected. If pressure did not rise, replace fuel pressure regulator. If pressure rose, but
readings were lower than specified, check for clogged fuel filter or fuel line leakage. If
pressure rose, but readings were higher than specified, check for pinched or clogged fuel return hose.
5. Relief fuel pressure and remove gauge. Reinstall fuel pulsation damper using NEW copper washers
and tighten to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Start engine and check for leaks.
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE
RELEASE. On Civic, remove 12-mm banjo bolt. On Prelude, remove the sealing nut on fuel rail.
On all models, connect Fuel Pressure Gauge (07406-0040001) and Fuel Pressure Gauge Adapter (90201-
P0A-003). Reconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect vacuum hose from fuel pressure
regulator and pinch return line closed. Start engine, and read fuel pressure. If engine starts,
go to next step. If engine will not start, turn ignition on, wait for 2 seconds, turn ignition off, then
on again and read fuel pressure.
2. With engine idling, reconnect vacuum hose to fuel pressure regulator and release fuel return line.
Read fuel pressure. Both gauge readings should be within specification. See REGULATED
FUEL PRESSURE table. If fuel pressure readings are within specification, go to next step. If
fuel pressure is higher than specified, check for punctured or clogged fuel return hose or
defective fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure is lower than specified, check for clogged fuel
filter, defective fuel pressure regulator or fuel line leakage.
3. Relief fuel pressure and remove gauge. On Civic, tighten 12-mm banjo bolt to 25 ft. lbs. (33 Nm).
On Prelude, tighten 12-mm sealing nut to 16 ft. lbs. (22 Nm). Start engine and check for leaks.
