HAND TOOLS: AN OVERVIEW
A hand tool is any tool that is powered by hand rather than a motor. Categories of hand
tools include wrenches, pliers, cutters, files, striking tools, struck or hammered
tools, screwdrivers, vises, clamps, snips, saws, drills and knives.
Outdoor tools such as garden forks, pruning shears, and rakes are additional forms of hand
tools.

Pliers & Cutters - are used for gripping something round like a pipe or rod, some are used for
twisting wires, and others are designed to be used for a combination of tasks including cutting
wire. There are also tools that are used just for cutting wires (as opposed to wire cable and
rope). Use the correct pliers or wire cutters for the job.
Crimping Tools- is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of
them to hold each other. The result of the tool's work is called a crimp.

Wrenches - is a tool used to provide grip and mechanical advantage in applying torque to turn
objects—usually rotary fasteners, such as nuts and bolts—or keep them from turning.
Soldering Iron - is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow
into the joint between two work pieces.
De-soldering Pump - is the removal of solder and components from a circuit
board for troubleshooting, repair, replacement, and salvage.

Wire Stripper - is a pair of opposing blades much like scissors or wire cutters. The addition of a
center notch makes it easier to cut the insulation without cutting the wire.
Static Safe Tweezers - are small tools used for picking up objects too small to be easily handled
with the human fingers. The tool is most likely derived from tongs, pincers, or scissors-
like pliers used to grab or hold hot objects since the dawn of recorded history. In a scientific or
medical context they are normally referred to as forceps.
