The document describes a proposed solution for a TI analog design contest submitted by a team of 3 students from BIT Mesra under the guidance of their professor Dr. S.S Solanki. The proposed solution includes an alcohol sensor, force sensing resistors, an over-speed detection unit, overload detection unit, and an LDR-based automatic headlight switching system to build a smart safety system for motorbikes.

Alcohol Sensor
• Used MQ-3 Alcohol sensor to sense if the driver is drunk or not
• They give analog output corresponding to the Alcohol content in
the breath
• The output of MQ-3 is connected to analog input pins of
MSP430G2553

TI Analog Design Contest 7

Force Sensing Resistors
• Force sensing resistor changes resistance when force or
pressure is applied
• Force sensing resistance can be set up in voltage divider along
with unity gain buffer configuration to output analog value
• Texas instrument LM358 op-amp IC is used for this purpose

Force Sensing Resistors(connection)

Over-speed detection unit

• Speed data given by internal speedometer of the bike is used

• This data is fed to the MSP430 microcontroller which decides if
bike is over-speeding or not
• If bike crosses the speed limit an alarm will start to buzz which
can be stopped by deceleration only

TI Analog Design Contest 10

Over-load detection unit
• Overload detection unit consists of Force sensing Resistors
placed under the seat of the bike
• An increase in weight of the riders after a certain limit is sensed
by the Force sensing resistors similar to the impact sensors
connected on the helmet.
• The sensors are properly calibrated to indicate more than two
persons

TI Analog Design Contest 11

LDR based automatic headlight
switching
• LDR decreases its resistance when light falls on it
• It is used in a voltage divider configuration the output of which
is given to the microcontroller through a comparator
• The comparator decides whether it is day or night and outputs
HIGH or LOW according to it which is processed by
microcontroller to switch ON the headlight
